The latest Chinese “god song”(an Internet term to describe pop songs that spread virally through the Internet(像病毒一样传播开来) is still making debates(争论) between those who view it as a milestone for Chinese pop music going global and those who regard it as a bad image of China.
Last week, Little Apple, written and performed by the Chopsticks Brothers, won the AMA International Song Award and the duo performed the song at the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Another Chinese pop singer, Zhang Jie, won the International Artist Award.
But while fans of these singers are thinking highly of the awards(奖) and the performance by the Chopsticks Brothers at the AMA celebration, there are others who are less excited. They have questioned the value of the awards and what effect it will have on Chinese culture’s “going abroad”, saying it may leave foreign audiences with a poor impression(印象) of Chinese pop music, and even Chinese culture.
The Little Apple phenomenon, both home and abroad, can be more easily understood and judged if we look at it from a business view rather than a cultural view. The professional promoters behind the duo have developed a clear strategy(策略) to promote the duo and their works, not just this particular song. Little Apple was originally released(发行) to promote the duo’s film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon.
From the very beginning a marketing strategy was used to promote(提升) the song, which immediately went viral on the Internet due to its repetitive rhythm(重复的韵律),easy-to-remember lyrics(歌词), simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grass roots (草根) nature. The video accumulated(积攒) more than 1 billion bits on China’s major video websites.
Although the song was generally disliked by music professionals who criticized(批评) it as “musical junk food”, Little Apple’s popularity nationally paved the way(为…铺平道路) for promoting the duo internationally.

Did you know that, in 2016, over 18 million people attended classical concerts in Germany? That’s more people than those who went to main league football matches! Earlier this year, Germany continued its celebration of classical music with the opening of a new concert hall in the heart of Hamburg. Germans are incredibly proud of it and it’s the first thing I show to my friends when they come to visit.
Known as the ‘Elphi’ by the locals, the Elbphilharmonie is a beautiful tower of glittering glass sitting atop an old warehouse by the banks of the river Elbe. The plaza(露天广场)is open to the public an from the middle of the city’s tallest building, you can gaze across the harbour, miles of rooftops and passing ships below.
The main concert hall seats over 2000 people and is one of the most advanced music venues in the world. Two smaller concert halls are used for jazz, world and contemporary music. In addition, if you’re unbelievably rich, you can buy one of the 45 luxurious apartments lying within the building.
Construction began in 2007 with a budget of €241 million and a two-year period. Fast forward ten years, the building eventually opened with a final price tag of over 800 million!
I consider myself very lucky that the Elbphilharmonie opened during my time living in Hamburg, but unfortunately I haven’t yet been able to attend a concert. Everything is sold out for six months! For now, I’m content to visit the plaza to enjoy the impressive view over the docks and see the innovative architecture up close. Hopefully one day soon, I’ll be lucky enough to grab a last-minute concert ticket!

It is possible that you’ve heard one of the world’s most famous piano pieces Für Elise. It was written by the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. He is considered by some to be the greatest composer of all time, Sadly, Beethoven didn’t live long enough to enjoy the popularity of this little piece. It wasn’t published until many years after his death.

Though Beethoven composed Für Elise in 1810, it wasn’t discovered until 1865. It was published two years later, and the music became popular right away. However, some details remain a secret, especially the title because Beethoven wasn’t alive to discuss the work.

Ludwig Nohl, the man who discovered the piece, believed the title read Fur Elise. Yet because Beethoven had terrible handwriting, others weren’t sure who it was dedicated (献给) to. Some thought it might have read Fur Therese. The title Fur Elise means For Elise in German. But to this day, no one knows for sure who Elise was.

Some believe Therese Malfatti, Beethoven’s student and friend, is the strongest candidate (候选人) for the piece’s title. It’s believed that he proposed marriage (求婚) to her in 1810, but they never married. After her death, the music, which was signed by Beethoven, was found in her things.

Why is Für Elise still so popular today? It is because many piano students are introduced to it by their teachers. It’s also part of German pop culture. For instance the easily recognizable music can be heard in commercials (商业广告) and in movies. It’s also a popular mobile phone ring. Google has reported millions of searches for the   famous music.   In some places of China, rubbish trucks play the music to remind people to take out their rubbish. Not only did her passion get her through some difficult times, but when she was 14 it also brought her to the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage, where she impressed everyone with her performance.

Sirine was totally paralyzed by the time she was 10 years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t much they can do. So her parents focused on helping her adjust to her new life, which was when her dad said she was first introduced to music. “I remember one day, we were driving in the car. This is about when she was getting to the stage where she couldn’t look out the window anymore to see things, and I didn’t know what to do. I just put the music on really loud. She started singing in the car, and she was so happy. And then she just found happiness every time I put music on,” her father said.

It didn’t take long for them to realize Sirine had tremendous talent. When she appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she told everyone just how much her passion means to her. “I guess music heals me,” she said. “That’s just what I live by, and music is my thing.” Then she headed over to the piano, where she played the piano and sang beautifully enough to bring the audience to tears! Unsurprisingly to everyone but Sirine, all four judges voted her into the next round of the competition!

Afterward, she said, “I can’t even say it’s a dream come true, because I didn’t even dream of it at any point... I never thought that would be realistic in my life.”
