On a Saturday night at home while relaxing with friends, a dog showed up at the house. In an attempt to find the legal owner and return the dog, we knocked on the door of the legal owner and an old man opened the door. This was the start of an interesting week.
The old man sat down, made himself at home, and gifted us the dog. After a brief visit, he left, and we were now the proud owners of this dog. It takes experience and knowledge to know that our lifestyle can’t satisfy the needs of this dog; the owner that gifted us the dog was mismatched for him as well.
Three attempts to return the dog to his old owner failed. (I think he was avoiding us.) Because our lifestyle didn’t allow us to give this poor dog the attention he needed, he disturbed the neighbors. They got involved. After we shared the story, they gained a new perspective and wisely stepped in to help us find a solution.
One week later it was decided that dog would be picked up from us by the old neighbor. He would then return it to the previous owner who was more equipped to care for it.
When faced with unexpected challenges in life, it helps to see everyone’s perspective. We have to look at one another’s perspective to solve a problem with honesty, experience and knowledge. That’s the sign of a leader. Although the old neighbor typically has little to do with leadership, it did bring a neighborhood together to understand one another and work as a team to solve a problem.

So what is rewilding?

Imagine our natural homes growing instead of shrinking. Imagine species (物种)diversifying instead of declining. That's rewilding. Rewilding is ecological restoration. Rewilding offers hope for wildlife, humans and the planet.

Why is rewilding important and necessary?

●Our natural ecology is broken. The places where you would expect wildlife to exist have been reduced to wet deserts. The seabed has been destroyed and there have been no livingcreatures any more.

●Our wildlife is disappearing. Many wonderful species have declined over the past century. We've lost more of our large animals than any European country.

●We need keystone species. These vital species, including top predators (食肉动物), drive ecological processes. Their loss has worsened our living systems.

●Nature looks after us. Good natural ecology can provide us with clean air and water, prevent flooding and store carbon. Rewilding can leave the world in a better state than it is today.

What are challenges?

As a long-term project, our “rewilding britain” has its challenges. Many people are notinterested, because we have got used to the lack of native forests. Many farmers oppose the idea. They thought it a crazy idea to bring back predators because they would start killing farmanimals. It takes time to educate them. Above all, we need money! So we need your help!

Make a donation.

Help us bring back living systems and restore wild nature!

With your help we can. . .

●Open up new chances for rewilding and push for change.

●Develop tools to educate, influence and spread the word.

Thanks for your support.

A device floating in the water off the coast of southern Chile aims to collect data on nearty whales to protect them from passing ships

The first electronic buoy(浮标) was recently placed in the sea in the Gulf of Corcovado. The device is designed to listen to the sounds whales make when they communicate with each other. The animals use sounds to map their movements and to hunt. The sounds are processed by artificial intelligence (AI )-powered computer systems in an effort to identify where the animals are. This information is then sent to shipping operators to help them avoid crashing in to whales

A non-profit organization put the buoy in place. The group seeks to develop technology tools to provide a warning system for shipping companies. In addition to helping protect whales the "smart" buoy also collects data on the health of the ocean and the effects of climate change. The Gulf of Corcovado is rich in sea life, including a large number of blue whales, as well as Southern right whales, which are endangered now. The population of the area's whales is the largest during the summer season in the Southern Hemisphere

"This is the beginning of a longer road," said Sonia Espanol, director of organization. She noted that her team planned to cover the gulf with at least six buoys. The buoy works by using software called Listening to the Deep Ocean Environment. The device continuously monitors ocean sounds. It uses AI to identify the kind of whales and where they are in real time. It then sends messages to nearby ships, so they can alleviate noise levels and try to avoid crashes.

The buoys also contain sensors to measure water temperatures, oxygen levels and more to predict ocean health and the effects of climate change. That information is expected to be used to help guide public environmental policies

【小题1】What does paragraph 2 intend to tell us?
A.The necessity of protecting whales
B.The important role of whales' sounds
C.The unique ways of whales' communication
D.The working process of the electronic buoy
【小题2】What information can the buoys collect?
A.The health of whalesB.The change of sea life
C.The condition of the oceanD.The cause of climate change
【小题3】What does the underlined word "alleviate" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.RidB.CollectC.ReduceD.Recognize
【小题4】What is the purpose of the information collected by the buoys?
A.To guide public environmental policies
B.To improve the ocean's oxygen levels
C.To solve the problem of climate change
D.To instruct passing ships to go smoothly

Search and rescue teams are often accompanied by man’s best friend. A dog’s superior sense of smell can be critical to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat.

These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit APOPO train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell and they’re just as trainable as dogs.” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”

At the moment. the rats are wearing homemade backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment and location trackers and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris(模拟的废墟). Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins. “We have not been in a real situation yet, we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris.” Kean said. “We have the potential to speak to victims through the rat.”

Researchers train them on a basic series of behavior. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually expand and increase the complexity in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed building site.

The training just started. and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.

【小题1】What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A.They are easier to train.
B.They have a better sense of smell.
C.They are more flexible with a smaller size.
D.They adapt to new environments more quickly.
【小题2】What function is expected of the backpack?
A.To guide rats to find survivors.B.To protect rats from being injured.
C.To provide some food for trapped people.D.To help rescuers communicate with victims.
【小题3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The process of training the rats.B.The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C.The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites.D.The importance of the research environment.
【小题4】What will researchers plan to do next?
A.Use rats for rescue work on a large scale.B.Send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C.Conduct further study on disaster prevention.D.Develop the tracking technology to assist GEA.
