Take the shopping cart as an example. Sylvan Goldman was a grocery store owner. Like most businessmen, he wished that his customers would buy more so that he could make more money. He knew what if they could carry more goods easily as they were shopping, when his sales would go up. While thinking about the problem one night, he had an idea. Working with a local handyman named Fred Young, he designed the first shopping cart. Today, retailers who use shopping carts sell more goods and make more profits.
Nature has also inspired inventors throughout history. This is what happened to George de Mestral one day. While hunting with his dog in the Swiss Alps, he noticed how the burs (刺球) of certain plants stuck to his clothing and to his dog’s fur. After examining them under a microscope, he found they had tiny hooks that could easily stick to the fibers of clothing or animal hide. For the next ten years, George de Mestral searched for the best way to produce his idea. The result of his original inspiration was Velcro, which is used in many modern objects, including sportswear, shoes, automobiles, and even space suits.
These examples show us that there are at least two possible inspirations for human creativity in the world of inventions — profit and nature. No doubt, the future will continue to breathe new life into the economies of the world with fresh ideas and inventions. How many of their creations will be inspired by natural phenomena? The world’s problems require creativity and we can expect best solutions from future generations.

Have you ever seen a rushing car without a driver?
So how do they work? The cars have sensors all around which can detect other cars and obstacles in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the car knows how far it is from the kerb (马路牙子) or other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used so the car knows how to get to your destination.
Sound like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” would be possible with this new technology.
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job by the dawn of driverless cars.
A.All you have to do is type in the address! |
B.There would also be many legal decisions to be made. |
C.However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. |
D.Driverless cars have many advantages as well as disadvantages. |
E.It sounds crazy, but driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. |
F.In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans. |
G.Bus, taxi, train and tram drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary. |
Virtual doctor app Babylon Health accidentally showed users videos of other patients’ consultations with their doctors, which are strictly confidential (保密的). The story was first reported and confirmed by BBC News.
The case occurred after a U.K. user said they were able to access dozens of videos of other patients’ sessions. An investigation by Babylon revealed that the issue affected a small number of other U.K. users. Babylon said a software error was to blame instead of a cyber attack.
The London start-up, which was valued at $2 billion, said it has fixed the problem and informed the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Founded in 2013 by Dr Ali Parsa, Babylon has built an app that allows people to make video calls to doctors and other healthcare professionals, and get an electronic prescription. It has around 5.6 million users worldwide.
Rory Glover, from Leeds in the North of England, opened the app on Tuesday to check a prescription and noticed that he had around 50 videos in the “Consultation Replays” section of the app that didn’t belong to him, according to BBC News.“I was shocked,” Glover told the BBC. “You don’t expect to see anything like that when you’re using a trusted app. It’s shocking to see such a monumental error has been made.” Babylon said it takes security very seriously and that it has contacted the affected patients to apologize.
“On the afternoon of Tuesday 9 June we identified and resolved an issue within two hours whereby one patient accessed the introduction of another patient’s consultation recording,” a Babylon spokesperson said. “Actually, we have long way to go to cope with the private matter, but we will take it really seriously,” he added.
【小题1】What is the main cause of showing other patients’ consulting videos?A.BBC News. | B.Doctors’ fault. |
C.A cyber attack. | D.A software error. |
A.The London start-up. |
B.Babylon spokesperson. |
C.An electronic prescription. |
D.The Information Commissioner’s office. |
A.Because he failed to properly use a trusted app like Babylon. |
B.Because he discovered other people’s videos in his own app. |
C.Because he found that his own videos were scanned by others. |
D.Because he didn’t take his own app security very seriously before. |
A.How to appropriately use Babylon. |
B.How to resolve the errors of Babylon. |
C.How to see other people’s prescriptions in Babylon. |
D.How to prevent yourself being attacked in Babylon. |
Tokyo University laboratory has developed a robot that never loses at the game of Rock Paper Scissors. That is because its visual processing abilities and fingers work together faster than any human brain. A video of the robot has been watched by more than 3 million viewers on YouTube since going online at the end of June.
Tokyo University engineering professor Masatoshi Ishikawa has a good-natured response to frustrated human losers who accuse him of essentially creating a robot that cheats. “It is not cheating. Every one millisecond (千分之一秒) the image processor decides and recognizes the shape the human hand is going to make. And then the robot can make a winnable shape one millisecond later than a human being. Only one millisecond, but a human cannot see this difference because the human eye is very slow,” explained Ishikawa.
At the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory there has been amazing progress which shows the near perfect accuracy of robotics, such as a robot that can catch a falling egg without breaking it, another one that can tie a knot, and a robot that may not be quite ready for the NBA, but is able to dribble (运球) a ball.
In sports such as baseball and cricket, the misses outnumber (比......多) successes for even the most skilled athletes. That is not so in this award-winning school laboratory. For instance, an intelligent robot is the result of five years of research and a lot of trial and error. And the cost of just one finger on the robot is equal to that of a mini car.
The technology obviously has uses beyond fun and games. Corporations are eager to take advantage of the lab’s technology for industrial and other practical uses. And there is talk of applying it to assisting disabled people and improving human capabilities.
