In 1975, a San Diego homemaker named Marjorie Rice came across a column in Scientific American about tiling (瓷砖). There is a problem which has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice’s chance encounter with tiling, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes. “I thought she was just drawing casually,” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice who took only one year of math in high school, was actually discovering never-before-seen patterns.

Born in Florida, she loved learning and particularly her brief exposure to math, but tight budget and social culture prevented her family from even considering that she might attend college. “For Rice, math was a pleasure,” her son David once said.

Rice gave one of her sons a subscription to Scientific American partly because she could read it carefully while the children were at school. When she read Gardner’s column about tiling as she later recalled in an interview: “I thought it must be wonderful that someone could discover these beautiful patterns which no one had seen before.” She also wrote in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. Lacking a mathematical background, I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.”

Astonished and delighted, she sent her work to Gardner, who sent it to Doris, a tiling expert at Moravian College. Doris confirmed that Rice’s finding was correct.

Later, Rice declined to lecture on her discoveries, citing shyness, but at Doris’s invitation, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was introduced to the audience. Rice still said nothing of her achievements to her children, but they eventually found out as the awards mounted.

Growing up, I was always totally in love with fashion. I’m the type of girl who follows Fashion Weck trends and spends much money on clothes. And while I have dreamed about building a career in fashion, I’m well aware that it’s not easy to make a name for yourself in the field. Despite this, I decided against studying medicine to follow my dream and went to West Virginia University for Fashion Design.

When I got a part-time job at Girl’s Lift last summer holiday. I was excited to be able to write articles for the website, sit in on editorial meetings and help pick the cover for the August/ September issue. But when GL editor-in-chief Karen asked if anyone wanted to help out in the   fashion room for all the clothes, accessories, shoes and beauty products used for shoots(拍 摄). I jumped at the opportunity. After spending so much time with the clothes, I knew I just had to go on site for the shoot. My parents always told me to speak up when I want something, so I gathered up the courage to ask Karen if I could help out on the shoot. Not only did she say yes, but she told me that I could help out at another the following week.

The next day, when the photographer asked me to help him test the lightning for a few shoots, I was super excited. When one of the two models didn’t show up, I was asked to step in for her. Before I knew it, I was sitting in hair and makeup, being fitted for my clothes for the rest of my life. Never in a million years did I think I would be in a magazine. Let alone on four pages of a   major fashion magazine. I am really grateful for this opportunity, but it would never have happened if I didn’t speak up and ask to be a part of it.

Marty was new at school. On his first day, he showed magic to his schoolmates. He made a toothpick (牙签) disappear and appear within seconds. Everyone wondered how he did it.

“How did you do that?” I asked. “Sorry, but that’s the first law of magic. A magician never lets out his secrets.” Marty smiled. I thought he was tricking everyone. I would make his secrets known to all.

The next day, Marty gave his second magic show. He said he could make things float (飘起). He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That’s when I saw it: a thin line tied around the end of the pencil and attracted to a button on Marty’s shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding (滑动) it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, but I found the secret. I got close to him and said, “I know how you did it.” He looked nervous and asked me, “Are you going to tell others?” I thought for a moment. If I told, I’d finally be able to prove Marty’s magic was fake (假的). Then Marty might lose his new friends. So I told him that I would say nothing about it. And then I walked away.

“Wait!” Marty jumped in front of me. “You’ve got a pretty good eye for magic. If you’re interested, I have an idea,” Marty suggested. And I accepted his idea. That’s how the Magic Marty and Mysterious Matt Lunch Show began. We’ve been a magic team for three months now. It turns out that instead of a fake magician, Marty is a real friend.

I’m Louis. The first ten years of my life was perfect — until my parents told me a piece of news. Before I tell you, let me describe a great day mine before.

Every morning, my mom woke me up by kissing me and my great day started. My dad was only better. When I got up, the good smell of breakfast reached my nose. To make me happy, he even make Micky Mouse pancakes for me every day just to make me love my breakfast.

Then, during the drive to school, three of us sang along the way. After school, Dad usually played chess with me, waiting for my mom to cook dinner. We ate and told each other stories about our days. After dinner, Mom never forget her special — an enormous piece of chocolate cake.

Everything was great. And then, she told me that very soon I’d have a little sister. Ugh! For ten years, I was the center of my family and I didn’t share my parents with anyone.

Later, I found I’d also have to share my bedroom with the baby. That was silly! Don’t even think about using my Disneyland glass. No way! I told my mom I didn’t want a sister. I said I was happy with the way things were. I even told them to take the baby back to hospital and gave her back.

But now, here they are, in front of the door. Dad is carrying the pink blankets, now grandma is going out, too. I know it’s time for me to meet her. Before I know it. Dad put the baby in my arms and I can’t believe the baby is smiling to me! Maybe she knows I’m her brother and she already likes me! Hey, maybe having a little sister isn’t such a bad thing. For me, I think she looks kind of cute and I want to keep her in our family! Who can turn away such a cute girl?
