Jack and Bruce are good friends. They are both in Grade Six and love hanging out together in their small fishing town.

One day, they decided to climb an ancient volcanic hill on a small island near their town to celebrate their last days of primary school. Though the two boys had been to the island many times before, Bruce’s parents were worried about them. With quick reassurance(保证), Bruce raced out the door to meet Jack.

Passing by a giant sculpture of a whale, Jack thought of the whales in the sea. Both of the boys are whale lovers. They have raised hundreds of pounds towards saving them, but they know they need to do even more. Maybe being in high school will help?

Since the island is not very far away from the mainland, soon they were nearly at the island. Suddenly, they heard a strange noise. Could it be coming from the many nesting birds on the island?

Determined to work out the mystery, they began to search. To their shock, they discovered a whale that had been trapped in a fishing net. In order to free the poor creature, they repeatedly dived down into the freezing sea to cut the net, but eventually, they were worn out. With a storm rolling in, they had to admit defeat.

As they rowed back, Bruce and Jack discussed what they should do next. They knew they couldn’t leave the whale trapped like that. They had to do something.

Back at home, they told their parents what they had found, and together they came up with a plan. They would raise money to hi re a boat with a bigger engine. They would also ask local businesses and people to donate food for the whale. Then they went door to door in the town, asking for help. Luckily, many local people offered to join them to rescue the trapped whale.

Marmi, my big sister, was eagerly looking for a pup (小狗) to look after and love all her life, so she would ask Mummy many times for a pup of her own, but the answer was always no. You see, my mum is not very fond of dogs, never has been, and always says they're too big a responsibility. She's just not a dog person. Well, that didn't stop my sister from looking or hoping for a dog. She used to search online for her favourite breed (品种). Until one day Marni found some Cavapoo pups advertised for sale. She immediately showed Mummy and begged to go and see them. Not sure how my sister persuaded her, but to our surprise, Mummy said we could go and have a look at them but not to get high hopes. Marni rushed everyone in the car before Mummy changed her mind. Off we sped to the advertised breeder's house which luckily wasn't too far. We got to the house and I bet I could hear my sister's heart dancing with excitement. As we rang the doorbell, we could hear cute little barks coming from inside. We went in and saw lots of little black pups excitedly jumping around. There were other people there too, so we needed to choose one fast if you know what I mean. It was rather crowded but the breeder let us hold and cuddle (搂抱) the pups. The breeder handed a little confident pup to Marni. The little pup seemed an old friend with my sister. But after a lot of cuddles, Mummy said we had to go and would have to think about it.

Thoa Bui was a local animal lover. She had rescued many animals over the years. When a sweet little cat was found alone next to her co-worker's house, her heart broke. So Thoa was-ted no time taking her into her home. Thoa recalled that this baby cat was "skinny, dirty and dying".

Thoa named the cute cat, Rosie. Thoa was ready and willing to do whatever to save this small animal. The poor kitty was abandoned from her mother at such a young age, and Thoa was getting nervous that Rosie wouldn't make it another night without eating properly. So, if Thoa herself couldn't help Rosie feel safe enough, perhaps another animal could help. As soon as Thoa brought in her cherished pet, Lilo the husky(哈士奇), into the room, everything changed for Rosie.

Together, the two instantly shared a special bond. Lilo lay down with Rosie, and as the minutes went by, it was clear that Rosie felt even more secure and out of harm's way. Lilo was never a mother. But it seems like her maternal instincts(母性)are incredibly strong! Lilo never left Rosie's side for hours. Once Rosie finally felt safe from Lilo's welcoming warmth and comfort, she started crying for food, and the little kitty tried sucking on Lilo to get some milk, as if she was Rosie's mother.

"She knew that Rosie needed her. She accompanied her until she was better,"Thoa said, "It looks like both filled up a missing spot in each other's heart. " Rosie felt secure with Lilo, and it was clear that Lilo felt the same with Rosie. Lilo laid by Rosie's side for hours, and didn't even get up to eat that night! Thoa had to actually bring Lilo's food to her. But Thoa would have never expected what was going to happen next between the two lovely creatures.

It was in the bleak midwinter, and the travelling couple struggled through the cold night, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came, it must not be out here along the roadway. Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper. Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of dogs, and the place was on a rural highway outside of town.

That December night, Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see, but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this road?

He parked his truck and approached the animals. Gus squatted(蹲下)and stretched out his hands to the dogs, which made no effort to escape, Gus read their tags by his truck’s headlights. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred(模糊不清的). He placed the dogs in his truck, on the floor of the passenger side. By the time he came around to the driver5s side, he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled (依偎)together there. Gus dried his phone, took a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katie Kiebel. Then he dialed the number from the dogs’ tags. A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.

“I gave those dogs away,” the man said. “They’re not mine anymore. ”

“Well, do you want them back?” Gus asked.

“No. I can’t take care of them. ” The man answered.
