A Virginia family whose home was destroyed by a fire last week recently received the gift of some old-fashioned Christmas cheer from “Santa Claus” (圣诞老人).

In the spirit of Christmas, the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department delivered presents to the family who lost their home and belongings in a house fire on Thursday.

“It was a working structure fire and unfortunately the family lost everything. We as volunteers knew that we couldn’t let this mom and her three kids go through Christmas without anything,” the fire station wrote on Facebook. “Yes, they’re OK but it’s Christmas, right?”

The fire station officials delivered Christmas gifts to the mother and her three children the following day at the local church shelter they were staying at, and in photos posted on the site, the children appeared joyful.

“We brought gifts and more gifts! The kids were overjoyed and very grateful.” the station said on its post.

“They were very happy to see all the gifts and the fire trucks that we brought the gifts in,” the department told USA TODAY. The kids received Barbies, Pokémon, artworks, remote control cars, blankets, clothes and shoes. The mother also received a gift card.

The Facebook post was flooded with what seemed to be comments from community members touched by the generosity. “The best Christmas gifts are the ones you give! Thank you all for your wonderful service and your big hearts!” one user commented.

“So thankful they are alright! We are truly blessed to live in such a giving and helping community, and our fire department and rescue teams are amazing! Great job! So proud!” another user wrote.

Have you ever thought about running lemonade stand (货摊) to make money? Sixth-grader Jamaria Crump has. She has been very successful at it, too. It took the 11-year-old one year to build her lemonade stand to earn money for those in need.

Her business, Lemon Topia, is a hit, which her teacher said was surprising. She makes pies, cakes and cookies besides lemonade.

Jamaria built LemonTopia herself with the help of Mom. “I’m a teacher and had no time to help her at first. So she had begged for a lemonade stand for a year or two before I let her do it.” said Jasmine Hall Jamaria’s mother.

Jamaria’s school announced a baking sale in 2016 that was a perfect chance to try out Jamaria’s plan for a lemonade stand. Jamaria made cookies and cakes. After the baking sale, she kept selling at school and community events Now she has her own business at a street market.

Of course, Jamaria pays for her own costs. She has to buy the materials and also pays her mother for rides and working for the stand. Hall says Jamaria does not like the cleaning up. “I make her wash all of her own dishes. That’s a constant battle.” Hall said.

The lemonade business can have its ups and downs. “I’m very proud of her for sticking with it.” said Hall. She wondered if Jamaria would get bored and stop. But that hasn’t happened.

Doran Brown, Hall’s friend, says Jamaria is a success in Baltimore. “She is adorable (讨人喜爱的). She is running her own business to help others.” he said.

Amelia Lisowe is 12 years old. She has a lot going on, but she still finds time to brighten the world of foster children. In 2018, she founded her nonprofit organization Lisowe’s Lights. It provides night lights to children in the foster care system. Foster care is when children are placed in another home. This happens when their families cannot take care of them or it is too dangerous. “Sometimes foster kids have to leave in the middle of the night because of neglect, abuse or drugs,” said Amelia.“Having that night lights makes it more comfortable in a new house where they may not know anybody.”

When she was just 8 years old, Amelia searched for places to volunteer. But she kept being turned away. Adults said she was too young.“I felt kind of defeated, because I love to volunteer,“ she said. One day her mother mentioned that foster children occasionally have to leave their homes overnight. Amelia began thinking of her own fear of the dark.“I couldn’t imagine being in a new home and being in that darkness.” Amelia said. She told a school counselor about her idea of collecting night lights for foster children. Her school hosted a drive collecting $1 donations. Lisowe’s Lights grew from there.

Amelia has made a big difference worldwide. Her lights have gone as far as England, Poland, Ukraine, France and New Zealand. In February 2023,Lisowe’s Lights launched(启动)an Ambassadors of Light program. The program encourages young people to get involved with the foster care system.

Rachel Hubbard, a former foster parent, called the night lights a wonderful blessing. “They are a big help to kids who are sleeping in a new place,” she said. A foster care group said the night lights are the first thing the kids always pull out of their bags. “They can just see the smiles on their faces.“Amelia said

“It’s surreal how much Lisowe’s Lights has grown,” said Amelia’s mother. The group has sent more than 15,000 lights to children.
