Nancy is used to getting up early every day. She is a young mother. By seven, she has already eaten breakfast, had a cup of coffee, washed the dishes, taken her shower, and put on her make-up. Then, it’s time to do the housework.

One early Saturday morning, when she was washing her son’s vacuum bottle (保温瓶), she felt upset. After having been used for long, the bottle was in poor condition. It was high time that she should buy a new one for her kid Bill, but her budget was limited. She had to decide that she would buy a new one only months later. Complaining wasn’t how she would normally choose to start the day, especially with the sun shining.

To cheer up and continue the day a bit more optimistically, she left the housework for later and set out with her little kid Bill for their morning walk on the beach a little earlier than usual. The local shops hadn’t opened yet. It was quiet outside; there were few people around.

Walking through the down town area, something on the pavement caught her attention. From a distance, it appeared to be a package of some sort. They walked over and Nancy picked it up. Upon examination, it turned out to be a brown paper bag. The downtown had nine blocks with stores. Grocery stores, furniture shops, cake shops, banks, bookstores, home-goods stores, clothing shops, and other businesses lined the street. Looking around, Nancy found none of them had been open for business. It was too early.

Nancy knew all this indicated that the object had most likely been purchased by someone the evening or day before. Since it was near the road, Nancy guessed someone must have dropped it, probably while loading other bags into a car.

Nancy looked inside the bag for more information. After opening it, she found there was a small handbag. In the bag, there were many cards. Among them, there was the owner’s ID card, which showed the owner’s address and name. Besides, there was a box in the brown bag. “What may be in the box?” Nancy thought to herself.

The Right Decisions

Lisa looked at her watch outside of the gift store and knew that in half an hour her mother would be standing on the doorsteps of their house waiting. She had to make up her mind or go home without a proper birthday gift.

“What should I do?” Lisa asked herself. “I owe Mr. Chapman five dollars for a science fair display board tomorrow.” That caused a serious, uncomfortable problem. If Lisa bought the tiny cactus (仙人掌) for her mother’s birthday, she would have money for the science board. If she bought the more expensive cut flowers, she wouldn’t.

Upon stepping into the gift store, the beautiful flowers immediately caught her eye. Lisa knew her mother would adore the flowers, so without another thought, she grabbed them.

Mrs. Mills, the store manager, smiled at Lisa when she came to the counter to purchase the beautiful flowers. “Wow, I wonder who will be gifted those beautiful flowers, Lisa,” she asked with a smile.

“It’s for my mother’s birthday, Mrs. Mills,” Lisa replied, returning a smile. The price tag (价签) said the flowers cost $5.30, and Lisa gave Mrs. Mills a ten-dollar bill.

Upon stepping out of the store, Lisa looked down at the flowers in her left hand — the afternoon sun made them brighter in color. She was glad she had made the right decision. Then, her eyes looked down upon her right hand, where the change that Mrs. Mills gave to her lay. To her surprise, she saw a five-dollar bill inside. Mrs. Mills definitely had made a mistake and she had been given too much money!

Lisa was caught in a dilemma. A voice inside told her to keep the money, so she could have amazing flowers for her mother and five dollars for Mr. Chapman’s science board. But another voice told her it was dishonest to keep the extra money, and Mrs. Mills would be held responsible for the mistake.

Zero-waste is the latest trend among eco-friendly and sustainable-living circles. Concerned individuals are taking a hard look at our wasteful habits, and finding creative and innovative ways to deal with the issue. Among them is a restaurant owner in India.

Minu Pauline owns a restaurant in Kochi, southern India. The 28-year-old restaurant owner was upset that her restaurant was throwing away a lot of food each day while many within the community were going hungry. Then she came up with an idea after watching a woman digging through the restaurant’s rubbish bags for food late one night.

“Just imagine being in the situation where you should be asleep but you feel too hungry and have to go out to find food,” she said. “It was very sad.” The experience was an eye-opener for Pauline. She realized just how much food we waste in society——including her own business, while so many people are going hungry. In response, she decided to place a refrigerator in front of her restaurant.

Once the refrigerator was in place, she encouraged customers to put whatever food they didn’t finish within. Pauline herself also put food in it. In addition, she wrote the date when the food was left in the refrigerator, so those who took it knew how long it had been there. The refrigerator was left unlocked 24 hour a day, and the food was available to anyone for free. Now the refrigerator feeds dozens of homeless people each day.

Blue Eyes

My family and I often feed the homeless in our community. It actually feels more like spending time with friends. We hug them, give them something to eat and drink, and sit and talk with them.

We hadn’t been doing this too long when we met a tall, thin gentleman I refer to as Blue Eyes. His blond hair was turning gray, and his eyes were as bright and blue as the summer sky.Blue Eyes smiled a lot.He knew that what he was doing on the streets was wrong. His addictions had taken hold of him, and he couldn’t pull away, though he never failed to let us know how thankful he was for us.

Blue Eyes was a business owner once, married to a beautiful woman. But his wife got sick, and he used all his money for her treatment. When she died, not only did Blue Eyes lose the love of his life, but he was also out of money. Then his beloved dog passed away.During all that heartache Blue Eyes turned to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain.He lost his home, and he ended up on the streets.

On one Sunday afternoon, one of the guys he shared the streets with advised us that Blue Eyes was sick and needed help getting a prescription (处方) filled. When we mentioned this to Blue Eyes, he put down his head, ashamed to make it seem that he had to ask for help.

We learned that he had cancer and various other illnesses. His prescription would cost sixty dollars—an amount that he didn’t have.We assured him that we would get it filled for him.

Walking away from him that day I wondered what we had just done. As much as we loved spending time with our homeless friends, the amount of money we were spending on the food and snack bags made our budget tight. But sixty dollars extra for a prescription? I didn’t see how we were going to pull that off. Something told me to just have faith, though.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

We went to the pharmacy (药店) and dropped off the prescription to be filled.
