I moved from America to Italy 14 years ago and I have learned a lot along the way. Here are several money-saving tricks I have picked up from living in Italy — most of which can apply to wherever you live too!
Buy fewer groceries at a time.
Italians tend to buy more fresh food — and buy it in smaller quantities. We have just what we know we’ll consume in a few days, before anything has a chance to spoil and go to waste.
Eat seasonally.
I love strawberries, cantaloupe and watermelon, but in Italy, I can only get them in the summer, when they’re ripe. Out of season, these fruits would have to be imported.
Cook more meals at home.
I live in a small town where we have no fast-food restaurants other than a pizzaria that does carry-out. OK! Not only do we save money on expensive restaurant meals, but we get more quality family time by cooking, eating and cleaning up together.
Yes, bigger cities have more options for fast food, delivery and carryout.
A.Of course, it takes a little more meal planning. |
B.We also end up having healthier meals. |
C.Another way Italians save is by growing their own produce. |
D.It takes a long time to transport goods from foreign countries. |
E.McDonald’s plans to open 200 new restaurants and hire 12000 staff in Italy by 2025. |
F.They’d be a lot more expensive, of lesser quality and quite possibly grow n in an industrial greenhouse. |
G.But even where the community is less closely connected, cooking and sharing meals with family and friends is still a big part of the social structure in Italy. |
Tips for Success in Online Learning
You may be one of the increasing number of students who is trying to achieve a college degree online. If so, follow these tips to help you be a successful online learner.
Many students think that online classes require less work and are easier than traditional classes. In fact, online classes are designed to be just as exact and difficult as traditional courses. Be prepared to do at least six hours of work a week in an online course. Some weeks and some full classes will require far more than that, especially during the weeks of finals and midterms.
Pay attention to the course learning aims.
Be open to new ways of learning.
Students learn in different ways, and teachers often use kinds of strategies to meet different kinds of learning styles. Give videos and audio files a try, even if they seem different from what you're used to.
Join with all your heart.
A good posting would cause thought-provoking(引发深思的) questions related to the lesson's topic and would be many sentences.
Make a regular schedule.
Log on(登录) to your course every day or at a minimum five days a week. Since courses are designed for students to do at least six hours of work each week, it’s not wise or effective to wait until the end of the week to do the coursework.
A.Do not make a guess |
B.Read and practice everything |
C.Every course has learning aims |
D.Be comfortable communicating through text |
E.Manage your time and do some work each day |
F.You will likely be given points for your postings |
G.Well-designed courses use technology to improve learning |
Ways to create calm in your daily life
Most of us need some space for calm in our lives. A few simple minutes can create much needed moments of calm.
Go walking. Walking is perfect and you can do it well anywhere. Simply walking and taking in the view is stress reducing.
Appreciate nature. When we think of nature we think of getting into the countryside or forests, and that is great if you can.
Listen to music. Many people listen to music to calm themselves down. Music actually lifts us out of ourselves. It can also draw our attention from boring and tiring things.
Try out some of these ways and you’ll soon be practicing “moments of calm”.
A.Do some activities. |
B.But what if you are in the city? |
C.Notice the animals around you. |
D.It is a time to get stressful thoughts out of your head. |
E.Music is a way to express the way that they are feeling. |
F.With enjoyable music even work can be “music to your ear”. |
G.You don’t have to find a mountain to sit on, or empty your mind of all thoughts for hours. |
Praising Kids
Parents praise their kids whenever they do anything that seems to be something remarkable. Jenn Berman, PhD, a family therapist says, “We’ve gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be stricter.” Parents have come to believe that by giving kids heaping portions of praise, they improve their self-esteem and confidence.
So what is the right amount of praise?
Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team, Donahue says. But if he’s out there every day, shooting baskets, running drills, and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses because it’s above and beyond the norm. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when he has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or complete a history assignment, Donahue adds.
A.Kids know when your praise is sincere and when it’s not. |
B.Still, don’t go too far in the other direction. |
C.But in fact, it may be just the opposite. |
D.Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. |
E.Children develop a sense of competence by seeing the consequences of their actions, not by being told about the consequences of their actions. |
F.But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate to the amount of effort your child put into it. |
