Re: School Choices 2023-24
Date: April 20,2024
Dear Staff,

We have finally completed our report, analyzing school choice data so that we can plan for the future. Surveys were sent to all the parents/guardians of students in our schools, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We heard from a good percentage of families — 89% of them responded. It is important to note that a result like this means that our families are really invested in education and want to improve the system.

I’ve included one chart from the report. The rest of it is available on our website. There is nothing further you need to do, other than to look at the charts if you want to.

A committee has already been formed to figure out what to do with the data we now have. This committee includes board trustees, the chair of the school board, and several staff from the head office, as well as principals and teachers from both elementary and secondary schools.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Colleen So

Physical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.

Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.

High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s study and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.

Not doing sports increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

According to the President’s Council on Fitness,Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

The Internet has become part of teenage life. There’s a report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet.

In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. It gives useful advice such as it’s good to read news or find helpful information to study. Some students also make online friends. But if you are meeting a friend offline, let your parents know.

Teachers and parents all think the book is a very good idea. It will teach students how to be a good person in the online world. It will be a guide for teens to use the Internet and keep students away from bad sites.

There are over 600 different Voluntary Student Organizations (VSOs) at Stanford. VSOs are those organizations in which membership is both open and limited to current Stanford students, and whose purposes and procedures are consistent with the goals and standards of the University. Students make all organizational decisions. In order to use the Stanford name, or to receive funding, all voluntary student organizations must register with the University through the Office of Stanford Events.

● A statement about membership qualifications.

● Clear procedures for officer elections.

● Identification of the authorized representatives of the group.

If a voluntary student organization seeks to use University facilities for meetings open to more than its own members, such meetings shall be subject to the regulations of the Committee on Public Events . All organization events held in University facilities must receive event approval from the Office of Student Activities. No student group may use University space or facilities or receive other University support for purposes of supporting candidates for public office.
