Akira Toriyama, a 68-year-old Japan’s leading comics author, whose manga and anime (漫画和动画系列) franchise “Dragon Ball” achieved worldwide success, passed away on March 1,2024.

Mr. Toriyama’s death was confirmed on Friday in a statement by his design production company, Bird Studio, and Capsule Corporation Tokyo, that the cause of it was the acute subdural hematoma (硬脑膜下血肿), a severe condition in which blood gathers and blocks the blood vessel between the skull and brain. But it did not say where Mr. Toriyama died.

Mr. Toriyama’s body of work, which includes “Dr. Slump” and “Sand Land,” gains its recognition far beyond Japan’s borders, having influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists. The studio said he had several projects in the works at his death. His best-known work, “Dragon Ball,” told us a story happening on a young boy named Son Goku who went on a journey to collect the seven magic al orbs (魔法球) that awoke and brought in a wish-granting dragon. Since it was on in the 1980s, it has been published 42 volumes, sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga, inspiring television, film and video game adaptations.

Throughout his career, Mr. Toriyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, believe it or not, he did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, as he put it, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying didactic (说教的) messages.” “The role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a work of entertainment through and through.”

In 2019, Bei Bei’s leaving from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, to join the giant panda breeding (繁育) program in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve, left a big blank for fans. What made the loss of the cute Panda even more upset was the belief that his mother, Mei Xiang, was too old to have more cubs (幼崽). However, on August 21, 2020, the 22-year-old proved experts wrong by giving birth to a healthy cub.

“Giant pandas are an international symbol of endangered wildlife, and with the birth of this precious cub we are excited to offer the world a much-needed moment of joy,” said Steve Monfort, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. “Because Mei Xiang is of advanced pregnant (怀孕的) age, we knew the chances of her having a cub were little. However, we wanted to give her one more opportunity to do something to her species’ survival. I am very proud of our animal care and science teams, whose expert knowledge and skills in giant panda behavior were so important to this conservation success.”

The zookeepers shared the precious moment of birth on the live panda camera and said Mei Xiang took to her new cub immediately and has since been seen lovingly caring for it. Nutrition (营养) is significant for the survival of the precious cub. New born pandas, which weigh just three to five pounds at birth, are unable to see or move for about two months. They, therefore, can only rely on the mother’s care, warmth, milk and protection. However, so far, the cub, which can be heard squawking (吱吱的叫声) on the live camera, appears to be perfectly healthy.

The newborn’s parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, are part of the Zoo’s cooperative breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Similar to its brothers and sisters — Tian Shan, Bao Bao, and Bei Bei — the new baby panda will be sent to China to try to increase the numbers of the endangered species.
