TikTok, the widely popular social media platform, has taken the world by storm with its short-form videos and addictive content. But did you know that there is also a Chinese version of TikTok?

The Chinese version of TikTok is called Douyin, and it has quickly become one of the most widely used apps in China. Launched in 2016 by Beijing-based tech company ByteDance, Douyin has attracted an enormous user base and reshaped the social media landscape in China.

So, how did Douyin gain such vast popularity in China?

One of the factors contributing to Douyin’s success is the large population of smartphone users in China. With over 1.4 billion people, China has a massive user base for social media platforms. Additionally, the rise in internet penetration and the availability of affordable smartphones have made it easier for people to access and use Douyin.

Douyin takes advantage of China’s culture of sharing and enjoying bite-sized content. In China. there has always been a strong demand for short-form entertainment, including popular formats like variety shows, quick comedy skits, and music videos. Douyin provides a platform for users to easily create and share short videos, allowing them to express their creativity and talent.

Douyin leverages the power of social network effects. Users can follow each other, like and comment on videos, and engage with a large community of like-minded individuals. This sense of belonging and community encourages them to spend more time on the platform.

Moreover. Douyin continuously improves its features and algorithms to enhance user experience and keep users engaged. The app uses advanced AI technology to analyze user preferences and provide personalized recommendations, ensuring that users see content that is relevant and interesting to them.

Overall, the rise of the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the large smartphone user base, the popularity of short-form entertainment in China, social network effects, and continuous improvements in features and algorithms.

Tencent announced yesterday that it will limit the daily time for youngsters to play its popular King of Glory game after parents and schools in Shanghai and other areas complained their children had become addicted to playing it.

From tomorrow, children younger than 12 will only be allowed to play the game for a maximum (最大值) of one hour a day, and after 9 p.m., they will be banned from logging into it, said Tencent. Those older than 12 will be able to play a maximum two hours a day.

The game system will remind players the time they have been playing and young players will be forced to log out when the time is up.

Tencent claimed these were the strictest measures in China’s game industry to prevent addiction and the company expected they would ease parents’ anxiety.

The company also said it had updated its system for parents to keep tabs on their children using its games.

Since February, parents can receive messages when children log in and spend money on the game after they connect children’s game accounts with their mobile phone numbers.

Now, parents can connect phones, tablets or computers that their children use to play games, so that they can keep an eye on the children even if they have several game accounts, Tencent said.

Song Zhe, a father of a Shanghai high school student, welcomed the measures but was not sure if they would be sufficiently effective. “I like the system that could lock up the devices as children can register many accounts,” he said, “but children are so clever that they can always think out counter measures.”

The Internet of Thing (IoT) aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerator, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow then to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet - connected devices and objects will be sending over date by 2020.

Specific Benefits

The IoT will allow people to track things and processes like never before. Airplane manufacturers will be able to continuously track the condition of airplane parts, allowing them to do preventive maintenance and avoid costly downtime. Consumers could install smart meters in their homes to monitor energy usage and observe energy price changes in real time. That would allow people to adjust their habits and use electrical appliances during lower-priced hours.

Some Fears

Some critics fear that the IoT could end up being a fashion that people lose interest in over time. Having Twitter feeds on refrigerator doors may sound cool at first, but the attraction could fade as quickly as the excitement over last year’s smart-phone! Other critics are doubtful that companies making Internet - connected appliances will provide long-term software updates. If that happens, a refrigerator or washing machine that should last 10 years or more could last two or three due to software that’s outdated.

A Positive Example

Early this year, owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice alerting them to a charger plug, needing to be fixed. Amazingly, owners of the Model S sat back while the company performed an “over the air” wireless update. Customers confirmed the update by tapping on the car’s touchscreen console to see that the Model S was running the latest software version. No trip to the dealer was required!

Perhaps Tesla’s remote fix is a sign of things to come. Someday soon, people’s lives might become a lot more efficient and convenient thanks to the IoT.

【小题1】How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?
A.By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.
B.By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses.
C.By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.
D.By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.
【小题2】What else do critics worry about the IoT besides its probably ending up being a fashion?
A.People will lose interest in it as quickly as the thrill over last year’s smart-phone.
B.Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.
C.Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.
D.The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly.
【小题3】According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric received a recall notice, they _______.
A.just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update
B.were required to go to the nearest 4s store to make some adjustments or repairs.
C.could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixed
D.had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company

As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. They don’t have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn’t work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.

I think there is huge potential (潜力) and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies and news and music, is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren’t always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.

My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3. She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53, when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn’t call her on the phone, so they insisted she use e-mail to communicate with them.

Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it. There’s been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren’t willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.

The reason why teens don’t make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while and there’s this silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted. It’s not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you’re in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.

【小题1】What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet?
A.They don’t know how to use some applications.
B.They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C.There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D.They have no friends to communicate with online.
【小题2】What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage?
A.Interesting.B.Amazing.
C.Boring.D.Common.
【小题3】We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________.
A.company managerB.program designer
C.college professorD.mobile phone seller
【小题4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.You have replied the message.
B.You have walked away from the conversation.
C.You have been cut off.
D.You have asked for a pardon.
