What is a barrier? It usually refers to an obstacle or a difficulty that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you’ re presently facing one, you have to resolve it. While many people avoid barriers, deny their existence or let barriers control themselves, what stand you take on barriers will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about barriers.

First of all, barriers give you motivations. Sometimes barriers can reset your goals. You might be faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’ re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn’t have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you’ll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions.

Also, barriers prepare you for the unexpected. They serve as guides for where to go next. Even though barriers can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it’s important to realize that they don’t stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Barriers shift your perspective.

Barriers, more often than not, are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new barriers. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and approach these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see barriers as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them.

It will be rewarding to accept barriers, which will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, thus allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.

I always had the preference to take on more than I should when I was young. At times, I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it. At other times, my purpose was to please someone and gain recognition for my efforts. Sometimes this led to stress or frustration.

When I was an IT manager after college graduation I was assigned to work with a wealthy customer and be a go-between (中间人)for my company. I took on the assignment happily, thinking that this might be my time to shine. However, the customer’s demands proved to be more than I could do with. And the company chose to stand by the customer and try to meet his unreasonable requirements rather than stick to what we had originally offered in the contract. As you can imagine, this led to a lot of unexpected problems and arguing with some of the staff who refused to do anything outside their scope (范围) of work. I remember walking into my office one morning, opening my laptop and staring at the blank screen for long, thinking to myself: What should I do? That was a difficult time in my life and then I finally had to give up my first job and left that company sadly.

Perhaps, I thought then, I could find the job that didn’t involve dealing with difficult people and difficult situations. But later I realized: Is this possible in our modern world? No, it is impossible. Now, I know, I shouldn’t run away from the challenges I faced in life: I had to learn how to deal with them. I regret not persevering ( 坚 持 ) in my job. We should train ourselves to look at things from a positive point of view, because that is far better than being trapped in the bad circle depression. I’ve come to see that when faced with difficulties, I should not give up, but persevere.

I have a big birthmark (胎记) on my face. But I don’t consider it a big problem. Instead, I think it’s something that makes me unique and memorable.

I especially admire a person called Joseph. He had a life which was full of hardships, from being sold as a slave by his brothers to being wrongfully accused and jailed in Egypt. And through it all, he kept his uniqueness, shared his talent and uplifted those around him. In my opinion, that he was able to rise to become an important official in Egypt was exactly because he could learn from his hardships and turn them into his advantages. They gave him the gifts of perseverance and bravery to stick to his faith and face any challenges that stood in his way.

Each of us has our struggles and pains in life, those things that we think hinder us from reaching greater heights. But what is important is that we know strength and beauty lie in the struggles, in overcoming hardships and in being open to people about your struggles.

When I meet someone, I try telling them, “The birthmark on my face makes me different, and would you mind my condition?” and with those few words, I show them that I have something special and I don’t avoid talking about it. Try that for yourself. Put the challenge up front so that you can put it aside from the start.

I hope this story of my struggle and the strength it has given me can add value to your life as well. We are on this journey of life together. With resilience and kindness, we can add light to our lives and the lives of those around us every day.

Life is hard-even harder than anyone thought it would be. When you were younger, you dreamed of the world being your playground, and you were told that you could do anything and be anyone you wanted. Somehow, though, things haven’t been the smooth sailing that   you wanted them to be. The world seems to go against you, and the last thing you want to hear is “Cheer up!”

Still, there’s a couple of things you might not notice about your situation. Next time you’re down, maybe the following will provide motivation.

Firstly, not everything is bad. It’s a well-accepted fact that bad news makes for sensational (极好的) television ratings. The fact is that something negative catches a lot more attention than something positive, and that’s because it’s easy to see things in a negative light. However, that shouldn’t distract you from the bigger picture.

Resist the tunnel vision that results from constant negativity. Remember that even though there’s lots of really nasty stuff going on, you’re surrounded by some pretty awesome stuff as well.

You should also remember other people aren’t you. No one likes being compared to another person. What makes it even worse, if that’s even possible, is when you do it to yourself.

Stop comparing yourself to another person and you’ll realize that you’re much more awesome than you give yourself credit for.

Lastly, failure isn’t where the game stops. So you tried something new, but you didn’t follow through. Frustrated at yourself, you stop trying. As a result, your quality of life goes down terribly. You’ve given up on it, though, because you don’t see the point (since you failed the first time).

Now, you’re an adult. The things you are trying are much more complicated than five-year-old you. However, your behaviour shouldn’t change in the slightest-when you fail in something, that’s just more information in your data bank. You know that method doesn’t work, so try another one! And another one after that! Do this until you figure it out. Giving up is for losers, and you sure aren’t one of those.

【小题1】The author mentioned bad news in order to show that .
A.bad news makes people see things in a negative light
B.bad news is more likely to catch people’s eyes
C.bad news attracts people to see positive things
D.bad news has a negative effect on television ratings
【小题2】What does the underlined part “nasty stuff” in Para. 4 probably mean?
A.Unstable emotions.B.Important events.
C.Amazing incidents .D.Something unpleasant.
【小题3】How should we view failure according to the passage?
A.We will change our behaviour.
B.We will keep trying the old method.
C.We should learn from failure.
D.We should think in a more complicated way.
【小题4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.It inspires us to learn from negative experiences.
B.It compares negative and positive experiences.
C.It criticizes those who are affected by bad experiences.
D.It discusses how negative experiences affect others.
