China celebrates Youth Day every May 4. It was established to honor the “May Fourth Movement” that began on May 4,1919, when a group of Chinese students 【小题1】(public) protested the weak diplomatic response of then Chinese government to the Treaty of Versailles, marking the beginning of China’s new democratic revolution. After World War I, China demanded all privileges of foreign powers 【小题2】(abolish). However, Western World dominating the Paris Peace Conference【小题3】(ignore) China’s request, and even decided to transfer the illegal privileges of Germany 【小题4】 Shandong Province to Japan. When the news reached Beijing, thousands of college students gathered on May 4, protesting, 【小题5】 resulted in the participation of a wider population. People expressed their anger through 【小题6】(demonstrate) and strikes. 【小题7】 greater movements finally pressed the government to sign the treaty.

“The dark night gave me black eyes, 【小题8】 I use them to seek the light.” We use this line, written by a contemporary Chinese poet, 【小题9】(illustrate) the thoughts and behaviors of the Chinese youth in 1919. It was also during this period 【小题10】 a nearly complete system of modern concepts was established in China.

Clothing, mainly featuring the color red, is commonly worn throughout the Chinese New Year because it was once believed 【小题1】red could scare away evil spirits and bad fortune. Then why does red have this miracle power?

According to tales and legends, the beginning of the Chinese New Year started with a mythical beast 【小题2】(call) Nian, which would eat villagers, especially 【小题3】(child). For many years, poor villagers lived in fear, 【小题4】(wish) the first day of the year would pass as soon as possible. Then a god visited and told them to put red paper 【小题5】their doors and to set off firecrackers to scare away 【小题6】beast. The villagers then 【小题7】(understand) that Nian was afraid of the color red. From 【小题8】on, red became the most popular color during the Spring Festival. Now, red represents many other meanings such as happiness, prosperity, warmth, virtue, 【小题9】(true) and sincerity. So if you are invited to a Chinese friend’s during the Spring Festival, you are 【小题10】(high) advised to wear red clothes.

New Year's celebrations take many forms, but most cultures have one thing【小题1】common—driving bad spirits away and wishing for a better new year. In China, one way 【小题2】(celebrate) the new year is Lion Dance. This is 【小题3】 traditional lively dance that combines art, history and culture. Two dancers form the lion. One holds the lion's head, while the other dancer forms the body and the tail of the lion.【小题4】(jump) to the rhythm of the drums and the gongs(锣)，they will perform many complex movements. Actually, today the lion dance 【小题8】(perform) to usher in a new and prosperous year. “Caiqing” -a ritual(仪式)of the lion plugging in greens,【小题9】(enjoy) great popularity because it is believed to bring in good luck and wealth to the New Year. The Chinese word “Cai” is “plug”,【小题10】sounds like the word for wealth (pronounced “Cai” in Chinese).
