I stood in the restaurant kitchen, my eyes wide, arms hanging awkwardly, ready to work but unsure of what to do. “You will be trained first,” my manager Aaron said, “and do remember to check every detail!” With these words, he walked away.

A workmate threw me a dish brush and said, “Let’s get started.” He introduced me to the basics of washing dishes and demonstrated the process. This was the beginning of my part-time job, a new stage where I was both eager to learn and anxious about the challenges ahead.

On a Friday night, Aaron swiftly entered the kitchen. “Who has just bused (收拾) the back right table?” he shouted, his voice sharp with urgency. My hands, slippery with bubbles from the bowl I was washing, nearly let it slip through my fingers. I wanted to say I was guilty, but Aaron’s cold stare didn’t promise a happy reward for the guy who admitted. Finally, a mix of fear and my own conscience pushed the response out of my mouth.

“I did, Aaron.”

“What were you thinking? Get back out here and look at what you missed!” His words forced me forward. I grabbed a rag (抹布) and followed him out to table twenty-two. As we made our way through the restaurant, he said something about rags, but I didn’t hear clearly with other conversations going on around us.

I quickly realized the true issue was the mess beneath the table. A nearly full cup of beer had tipped over, creating a small lake on the floor. It was a significant mistake on my part. “Take care of it!” Aaron tuned and stormed off to the front of the restaurant.

I dropped down to clean up the beer. That was when another problem occurred. I had brought only one rag. One already wet rag. It did nothing but increase the size of the lake. “More rags,” I thought. Immediately, I rushed into the kitchen and hurriedly grabbed five dry rags, hoping Aaron wouldn’t notice my brief absence.

Every week I save all the change and $1 bills I have in my purse. Then every Christmas I cash it in for as many $100 bills as the saved money gets me. I then wait for a family in need. I split the money in half and give half to the family in need and the other half to my nine-year-old son, Say’ Veon, who puts it in his savings account, to teach him about delayed satisfaction. Then he helps me get gifts or give the money to the family.

I adopted Say’ Veon after his mother, a close friend of mine, passed away from cancer before his fifth birthday. Even though Say’ Veon has dealt with great loss and sadness at such a young age, his generous spirit and loving heart shine through. He has given money to someone else who needs it more, such as his friends or classmates. Say’ Veon’s acts of kindness always blow me away and I feel blessed to have him in my life.

This week I got a call from a friend, DeeDee, who is 77 years old. She was upset because she had been cheated, and the cheaters took all the money out of her checking account which she lives on, and now she didn’t have the money to pay her rent and bills.

This morning, I took the money and showed Say’ Veon how much I saved this year. I told him what happened to DeeDee, and then asked him if he would be willing to give his half along with my half and donate it to her as our person in need this year.

He said, “Yes, of course.” This year our total was $400.

We went to visit DeeDee and my son handed her a Christmas card with the money. She opened it and said, “Thank you.” She then looked again and stared at the $100 bills.

A Meal with a Smile

At eleven years old,my main concern was money. Where could I get it? What would I spend it on?How much did I need to buy the new must-have thing my classmates either had or wanted just as badly as I did?

I went to my mom. “Mom,I need more money,” I said, leaning against the kitchen counter while she cooked dinner. “What else can kids do for a job around here?”

“You think you need a job?” Mom asked with a smile. “You could just enjoy the summer like the other kids, you know?” “I’ll still have time for that, but I want to work. ” I shrugged. “Okay, let me ask around.” Mom finally agreed.

The next day,she had an answer. “Your grandmother will pay you to help her deliver lunch each day to the elderly.” I couldn’t wait to start my new job on Monday after school dismissed for the summer.

When my grandmother picked me up, I thanked her for the job with questions. “It’s simple. We pick up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then we go on our delivery route.” That was easy.

After our load was arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop: a small house. I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. When I drew near to her,she smiled at me, revealing no teeth. The house smelled terrible and old like the antique stores my mom liked to visit. I held my breath until we went back out onto the porch. Was this really how some people lived? I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, some were nicer than others, but the same wrinkly people eagerly waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked again and again as I hurried to get out of there. I was sweaty and tired.

On our way back home, I sat at the backseat silently with the idea of giving up.
