The Bridport Prize Short Story Writing Competition

Rules of entry

The Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English aged 16. Entries must be entirely your own work. Entries must not have been published, self-published or accepted for publication in print or online, broadcast, or have won or been placed in another competition at any time.

All entries are judged anonymously (匿名地). Please do not include your name, address, etc on the document or in the file name. We disqualify entries if they are named or over the word limit. If you forget to add details, the title or word count, your entry won’t be disqualified.

Deadline

The deadline date for entries is 12 midnight (UK time) on 31st May 2022. Postal entries postmarked 31st May but received later will be accepted.

Length

Short story: 5, 000 words maximum. No minimum.

Format

Double line spaced.

Use any typeface, 12pt, black.

Do not add a cover or title page.

Add the word count to the top right of the first page.

Number the pages in the centre at the bottom of the page.

Save the file as a Microsoft Word document—. doc or. docx. We also accept file types. rtf, pdf, txt.

The maximum allowed file size is 2MB.

The file name should be the title of the story only.

Fees

£ 14 per short story. There is no limit to the number of submissions.

Results & Awards

Winners will be notified by email in September. A short film which will include the announcement of this year’s winners will be broadcast on our YouTube channel at 7pm on Thursday 28th October.

Scholarship Description： The $ 1,000 College JumpStart Scholarship is a virtue-based competition that is open to 7th—12th graders and college students and non — traditional students. Applicants must be juniors or seniors or adult students.

Scholarship Description： One or more scholarships are awarded each year to New Mexico graduating high school seniors and continuing college students. Students must go after a degree or certificate from a non-profit public or technical professional institution including community college.

Scholarship Description： Conserve Wildlife Foundation invites high school student from across the state to submit an original social media campaign showing why wildlife is important to protect. The fun and educational contest provides students with the opportunity to show their talent, creativity and love for nature. The students may get scholarships if they perform well.

COMMON TYPES OF DRUGS

A white powdery drug obtained from the leaves of coca plant.In general, abusers may experience sleeplessness, loss   of appetite,aggressive behavior,depression,illusion(幻觉） as well as high blood pressure and racing heartbeat.Repeated intakes will severely damage the immune system and result in death.

Morphine

As an extract(提取物）of opium, Morphine is widely used as a painkiller by doctors. However, it is highly addictive and abusers may experience paranoia,illusion and mental disorders.Excessive doses may cause death of breath failure.

Heroin

A highly addictive drug made from morphine. It rapidly causes addiction, damages the immune system, and causes itchy skin, reduced appetite,irregular heartbeat and blood pressure. Repeated injection at the same site causes veins to collapse.Death can occur from overdoses and diseases such as AIDS can be acquired from sharing needles.

Marijuana

Coming from the cannabis sativa plant, Marijuana goes by a variety of nicknames such as: dope, grass,pot, weed and Mary Jane. Abusers will experience hunger, increased talkativeness, mild illusion and slow reactions after consumption. Long-term abusers commonly suffer from hormonal disorder and smoking-related diseases.

Cough medicine

Commercially produced cough medicines contain varying amounts of Codeine. Small doses of codeine effectively relieve cough symptoms but abuse of Codeine can lead to addiction.Cough Medicine abusers may suffer from sleepiness, dry mouth, difficulty to urinate(排尿），light-headedness, loss of appetite and itchiness of the skin. Depression and confusion are also common side effects.

Drugs destroy lives and families and cost society dearly. Cherish your life and stay away from drugs!
