Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels. This has increased the amount of salt in fresh water 【小题1】(use )on coastal farms. As a result, farmers are 【小题2】 (gradual) unable to use fields close to the sea.

However, Mare Van Rijsselberghe, a farmer in the Netherlands is now using a 【小题3】(mix)of sea and fresh water 【小题4】(grow)healthy and tasty vegetables.

He teamed up with scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam and divided a farm 【小题5】 eight irrigated areas. Separate pipes pumped fresh and sea water, and 【小题6】 computer program created water with eight levels of salinity(含盐度).

The water levels and the levels of salinity were controlled by computerised measuring devices called “sensors”. Mr. Van Rijsselberghe said he was able to harvest vegetables from most of the eight test areas. He said the vegetables were smaller than 【小题7】 grown in fresh water. But he said they also had more sugar and salt, so they tasted much 【小题8】(good).

He found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the combination of sea and fresh water. Mr. Van Rijsselberghe said four kinds of these potatoes would be sent to Pakistan 【小题9】 thousands of hectares of land 【小题10】(damage) by salinization(盐化作用)last year.

We must have water to live. 【小题1】the water we use is clean and fresh, it will make us ill. The animals living in and around lakes and rivers must also have clean water. Our rivers and lakes supply most of our water. The clear, blue water found by the first American 【小题2】 (settler) has changed. Till now many of our water sources have been polluted. They are filled with dirt and waste 【小题3】 cannot be cleaned out. In many places, water is not safe for us to use.

On the afternoon of 11 March 2011, Tetsu Nozaki watched helplessly as a wall of water 【小题1】(crash) into his boats in Onahama, a small fishing port on Japan's Pacific coast.
