The Best Ways to Get Good at Any Sport

If sports are something that interests you, it stands to reason that you would want to be good at them. Succeeding in a sport takes skills, and skills take patience and determination. 【小题1】 Skills alone may take you far, but you’ll never go all the way unless you have the right attitude and team spirit to back it up.

Join a sports team.

If you want to become a sports superstar, joining a team is a good way to start. Even if your skills are currently low, joining an amateur league will sharpen up your skills. Sports teams are everywhere, and most of them are free to join. If you go to school, you should go for team tryouts when they’re happening. 【小题2】

Practice until your skills become second nature.

If you’re wondering at what point a skill becomes mastered, it is when you’re able to do it automatically and without thinking. This is called the autonomous stage, and it’s where you want to be at if you want to play sports competitively. 【小题3】 When you’re in the fight of a game, you won’t have time to think everything through, so practice until it’s all automatic, so you’ll know you’re ready.

Set ambitious but realistic goals for yourself.

【小题4】 Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you think you would like to be. Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the goal is especially big.

【小题5】

One of the biggest reasons people join sports teams in the first place is to make friends with new people. Chances are you’ll develop friendships with at least some of them. Making these friendships a priority is a good move if you want to become great at sports. You can practice together on your own time. The morale (士气) boost of playing with friends helps as well.

A.Set your sights wide.
B.Promote friendships with other players.
C.Recreation centers are often host to sports teams as well.
D.This doesn’t mean saying you’ll be professional within a year.
E.But if the desire is intense enough, you will do anything to realize your dreams.
F.Given enough time and repetition, a skill will eventually fall under this category.
G.However, you need to think about other things if you want to be a good sports player.

What makes you cry? Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?

When you think about it, shedding tears (流泪) from your eyes is an unusual thing to do. But it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad, upset or even when we’re very happy. 【小题1】 However, the feeling is the same—your cheeks puff up (肿胀), your eyes tighten and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. 【小题2】 And it’s suggested that it’s women who cry more than men.

A study in the UK in 2017 found that women admitted that they cry 72 times a year. 【小题3】 Writing for the BBC, Adam Rutherford says, “according to pretty much every study done, women do cry more than men.” But does this mean men don’t get as upset or emotional as women, or are they just more embarrassed about showing their true feelings?

【小题4】 This can be somewhere where emotions run high—someone might be stressed, their workload might be too much. As therapist(治疗师), Joann a Cross told the BBC, “crying is often a build-up of frustration and undealt-with situations and it’s a bit of a final straw(稻草) moment.”

But crying in the office or elsewhere can be cathartic (情感宣泄的), which can actually make you feel better. 【小题5】 Bawling(放声大哭) your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often.

A.This was, on average, more than men.
B.You may burst into tears for something sorrowful.
C.What causes this reaction differs from person to person.
D.Most adults think it embarrassing to cry loudly in public.
E.Maybe it dissolves or clears the negative or sad feelings you’ve had.
F.Some of us may sniffle (抽鼻子) a little while others may cry like a baby.
G.One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace.

Calming Down before the Speech

Public speaking makes almost everybody anxious. Even seasoned speakers need to calm themselves down(or pump themselves up)before they give a presentation.【小题1】

Practice in front of others. If you only practice speaking when you're alone, you're more likely to get anxious when you deliver the speech to an audience.【小题2】Practice a little every day, but on the night before you deliver the speech, don't practice. Just relax. If you notice that there's a section of the speech that makes you the most nervous, practice it extra. For instance, if you always get nervous right at the beginning, devote extra Practice time to the beginning.

Visit the location of your speech. If you can, spend some time in the place where you will give your speech.【小题3】If the location is in your workplace or school, visit it frequently to practice. Relax there as well. If the location won't be accessible until the day of the speech, try to come a little early so you can adapt yourself to the environment.

【小题4】Write down what makes you nervous about a speech. Consider each of them individually. What's the worst that could happen in each case? If it happens, what will you do? For instance, if you're scared that you'll forget what to say next, think, "I'll just pause and look at my notes."

Exercise before a speech. Running and other forms of violent movement can use up your extra adrenaline(肾上腺素). Try taking a jog, going for a rapid bike ride, or even dancing out your nerves on the morning before you present.【小题5】

A.Practice there if you can
B.List the things that you're afraid of.
C.Make notes of the key points of your speech
D.Get more chance to practice before small groups.
E.Here are some tips that might help reduce anxiety.
F.Below are four causes of anxiety before the speech.
G.If you can't do something violent,take a walk instead.

Some people believe that really successful students are just born that way. 【小题1】 However, the vast majority of successful students achieve their success by developing and applying effective study habits.

【小题2】

Successful students typically space their work out over shorter periods of time and rarely try to crowd all of their studying into just one or two sessions. If you want to become a successful student, then you must have regular, yet shorter, study periods.

Plan when you’re going to study.

Successful students schedule specific time throughout the week when they are going to complete their studying —and then they stick with their schedule. 【小题3】

Study at the same time.

Not only is it important that you plan when you’re going to study but also that you create a consistent daily study routine and stick with it. Thus, you’ll be mentally and emotionally more prepared for each study session and each study session will become more productive.

Have a specific goal in each study time.

【小题4】You need to know exactly what you need to accomplish during each study session. Before you start studying, set a study session goal that supports your overall academic goal.

Never delay your planned study session.

It’s very easy to put off your study session because of lack of interest in the subject, because you have other things you need to get done first or just because the assignment is hard. 【小题5】If you delay your study session, you studying will become much less effective. Delay also leads to rushing, and rushing is the number one cause of errors.

A.Students who study occasionally don’t perform as well as students who have a set study schedule.
B.Use study groups effectively.
C.Start with the most difficult subject first.
D.Don’t try to crowd all your studying into one session.
