Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”，still considers 【小题1】(he)to be a farmer. When he was young, he was encouraged to pursue a career in science or medicine. Gail Devers, an American athlete and also a three-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field, got her first one in 1992. 【小题1】 made Devers’ win so special was not just the nature of the race but also the journey she had taken 【小题2】 (get) there.

She also says, “My Graves’ disease has made me who I am. Therefore, I always tell people that if I had my life to live over, I would ask for this disease again,” she says. “I believe I’m stronger at 【小题8】 (have) to go through what I went through. Everybody is faced 【小题9】 challenges. We all feel like sometimes walls are closing in on us 【小题10】 there’s no way out. What do you do? You remember that strength and resilience that you have when you step on the line.

This year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Tu Youyou (co-winner),【小题1】research led to the discovery of artemisinin, 【小题2】 crucial new treatment for maria. Artemisinin has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and has led to 【小题3】 (improve) health for millions of people. Over 200 million people around the world get maria each year, and about 600, 000 die from it. Artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria, and 【小题4】 (think)to save 100, 000 lives a year in Africa alone.

Tu Youyou, a 【小题5】(commit) and patient, was born in Ningbo, China, on 30 December 1930, and graduated from Peking University Medical School in 1955. After she graduated, she worked at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In 1967, the Chinese government formed a team of【小题6】(scientist) with the objective of 【小题7】(discover) a new treatment for malaria, and Tu Youyou was among the first researchers 【小题8】 (choose). Her team examined over 2, 000 old medical texts, and【小题9】(evaluate) 280, 000 plants for their medical properties. From their research, they discovered and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments 【小题10】 the fight against malaria.
