As my parents worked a late shift, my three small sisters looked at me. “What’s for dinner?“ one of them said. The last time I made dinner was when I made pizza in high school. Now, I had three mouths to feed—ages two, six and nine—but I was short on ideas. Like a deer in headlights, I searched for a possible answer.

“Where’s the Twister (转盘游戏) game?”

“Not Twister,” Abby, my oldest sister, scolded, “Dinner. ”

I walked to the closet, pulled out the game. and tested the spinner (转盘). Then I slid a couple of sheets of paper between the plastic arrow and the cardboard base and divided it into four quadrant (象限). I looked at my sisters.

“Who wants chocolate?” Alice, my youngest sister, screamed happily. Abby crossed her arms. “Mum wouldn’t let that happen. ”

“Mum’s not here. ”I wrote in the upper right quadrant: chocolate. Andy, my middle sister, asked, “What are you doing?”

“You’ll see in a second.” I pointed at the second area. “How about noodles?” Alice started dancing around in a circle.

“When we get four options written on the spinner, we’ll spin to see what we do for dinner tonight.”

My youngest sister said, “Dress up like superheroes. ”

“Absolutely!” I wrote superheroes, with no idea how that would turn into a dinner idea, hoping the dial would land somewhere else. They debated the final section for a few seconds and then collectively decided on pizza. If they had suggested ”Run around at the mall“, I would have written it down. I set the spinner in the middle of the table. We gathered around the spinner, and I held up my hands. “We are going to spin it once, and whatever we land on、that’s what we’ll do tonight. ”

Abby shook her head. “I don’t think this is a good idea.” “It’s okay, honey. Mum will understand. ”

Alice yelled, “I want to spin it. ”Alice’s try sent the little, plastic arrow flying around and around until it landed on... pizza. Everyone shouted, “Pizza”, including me. I still had no idea what we were going to do. Abby looked at me. “But what are we going to do?”

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”

It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.

Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.

“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”

Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday?!

While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.

She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.

“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Autism is a mental disorder that affects children, particularly their ability to relate to other people. Having a child with autism adds an additional learning curve to parenting. And parents with kids with autism know just how beautiful and cruel it can be because they aren’t kids who fit into society’s typical mold. It simply means that parents, friends, strangers, caregivers, neighbors, and teachers need to find different ways to create a supportive community because every individual with autism is uniquely different.

Daniel, who has autism, recently wrote down his wish and Keivn, Daniel’s father, shared that because of his son’s autism. Daniel typically prefers to play alone. In fact, throughout his entire childhood Daniel never once asked to go play with friends. But this year, Daniel made a special birthday wish. The request floods and shocked his father because Daniel’s birthday wish was to make a few friends.

Kevin often shares updates about Daniel on social media in hope of recording his life. He is clearly aware that social skill training is important and difficult to autism children. After he learned of his son’s birthday wishes, he eagerly wanted to make Daniel’s birthday just a little sweeter.

On social media, he wrote, “Daniel is my son. Profoundly Autistic, he hasn’t one single friend. It’s his birthday today.” He posted his son’s written birthday wish and politely asked others to put in and wish his son a happy birthday. A dad’s heartfelt birthday wish for his son is the most beautiful story you will find, and this one is taking over the Internet.

Jimmy always perceived himself as a progressive dad, very open to different minds and perceptions. While he had imagined all sorts of headaches his son would possibly bring him to confront, never did it occur to him that the headache would come so early.

When his son was just a baby, asked about his favorite color, he babbled out “pink”. Seriously, what a baby said wasn’t a big deal and Jimmy didn’t make a fuss at that moment, but deep down inside, he felt somewhat uncomfortable and a huge question mark kept haunting him. How could a boy supposed to love ball games and racing cars become a fan of pink, a color that was generally regarded “girly”?

Jimmy even worried about the future school life of his son. He repeatedly pictured a horrifying situation where his son got bullied because he was labelled girly. On some nights, in his nightmare, the tease his son suffered and the miserable screams his son let out seemed louder against the deafening silence and the intense darkness of the night.

One incident always succeeded another. One day, when Jimmy returned home from a long day’s tedious work, his wife showed him a photo on her phone where all the finger nails of a pair of little hands were colored black. Apparently, those were his son’s hands. His son might have thought it was cool to learn from his mother painting her nails, so he grabbed a marker and colored his own.

Jimmy got shocked inside. What his son had done to his nails hit Jimmy’s bottom line. He was on the verge of explosion, with all the worst ideas dashing back and forth in his mind. At the thought of the possibility that his recurring nightmare would come true and that his son would be discriminated out of his own choice and preference that were not generally accepted, he almost collapsed as if he had been torn apart and his heart had got smashed to pieces. He considered scolding his son not because his son had shamed him, but because he could no longer mask his worry aroused by his son’s rough future that he thought was due to come.
