My wife Andrea and I picked a great time to move to New York City just a few days before the super storm Sandy hit the place.

Although Sandy _______ my family to stay indoors for two days while the wind and rubbish swirled through my new neighborhood, it _______ some unusual opportunities for us to meet our _______ by serving them. Before the storm _______ , my family went for a walk. We knew we’d be closed up for a while. We should enjoy some _______ time while we could.

The ________ was going to hit before she got all of her supplies up to her living place. ________ we were already set, we figured it would be a good _________ to get to know a neighbor.

So Andrea and I each ________ a pile of supplies and helped the woman get ________ home. We had a good time getting familiar with her. She was from the Caribbean. Andrea and I loved ________ her thick, rich accent. When the storm hit later that night, we felt a little less ________ because we had a friend just a few buildings ________ . After Sandy there were dozens of ________ of selfless acts of service on TV, as people helped friends, neighbors and strangers in need.

“Don’t worry. Those are just age spots (老年斑),” the doctor said. “Are you _________ that these are age spots?” I questioned, pointing to the dark spots on my hands. Angie, the doctor, smiled warmly and _________, “I’m 100% sure.”

I let out a scream of _________. “You’ve no idea how long I’ve waited for these to _________” I said. Angie looked slightly _________, and I realized there was no possible way I could explain my excitement. What Angie didn’t know was that I shouldn’t have _________ to see age spots! At age forty, there was not much hope that I would live long enough to see any signs of _________. I was in the battle of my life—fighting lung cancer.

After the five-year mark of being cancer free, I started to have hope. When I got my first white hair, I quickly pointed to my husband, “look, honey, a white hair.”

Later that year, I celebrated two milestone (里程碑)—my sixteenth birthday and twenty years of being ________ from cancer. I’m excited to be growing older with white hairs, wrinkles (皱纹) and now age spots. And I can see the beauty in all of them!

Until the age of eleven Zuna’s hobbies were pretty general: reading, playing the piano and dancing. Her interests _______ when she was in the sixth grade, as at that time, _______ and chemistry classes were added to the school curriculum (课程). Zuna was _______ by the two new subjects.

During the biology classes, Zuna realised that although her desire for more _______ was being achieved, her ambitions to do her own _______ and actually contribute to _______ were not satisfied. While looking for opportunities to _______ with research labs, she discovered that in many countries it was _______ for young students to do scientific internships (实习). She started _______ local research institutions, but was never selected because she was too young. Zuna’s first laboratory internship marked some ________ beginnings in her life such as her first successful research project, which ________ Zuna to participate in more scientific activities and then achieve greater ________.
