Hobbies can help a teen do physical exercise, develop social skills, reduce stress, and learn some valuable lessons, and of course they can be a source（来源）of fun! However, many teens are unwilling to start a hobby. We may ignore some great hobbies for teens already. If you are a parent, you just need to recognize and provide that interest for your teen. You can guide your teen to explore their interests and take up their perfect hobbies.

One way to help a teenager take up a hobby is to ask them what makes them feel good. Many teens may only focus on their weaknesses or things they have failed in. Instead, they should devote themselves to anything that they enjoy doing or that makes them happy. For example, a teen may be interested in music, sports, computers, crafting, role playing games, or science. As long as he feels good while doing it, it can turn into a hobby.

Maybe a teen has been wanting to try something for a long time. Don't ask "What do you want to do?" because it is a too broad question. You should ask "What would you like to do today?” or "What do you want to do this weekend?" You might also try saying, "Let's do something you are interested in today. What would you like to do?" If your teen wants to cook or likes to be outside, you may be close to figuring out a good hobby for them.

Teenagers spend much of their life away from the eyes of parents and don't always offer information about it. As a result,   sometimes adults are not totally aware that adolescents（青少年）are developing hobbies. A child may be developing his own hobbies away from home, so you may not have to encourage them to adopt new ones. Instead, you can support their current hobbies.

A rock is as big as a house. That’s how the guide book described Giant Rock. Dad said it was carried here by a glacier millions of years ago.

I was finally going to see it, on-snowshoes, with my three older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I’d been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow alongside wild-animal tracks. At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map in the information kiosk(亭子). “We start here”, Dad said, “on the red path. Then we turn left onto the purple circle. That’s where Giant Rock is.” “Remember to stick together, guys,” Uncle Don said.

The path ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple path, which wound back and forth, travelling through the hills and gullies. We settled into a rhythm, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunch-crunch-crunching through the snow. My cousins were faster than I was, but I managed to keep up.

Finally, we reached a hill and saw the massive rock sitting alone in the forest. “It really is as big as a house” my cousin Josh said, gazing up. My cousins and I high-fived(举手击掌)each other and jogged down the slope until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the rock's giant shadow, I noticed the sun had dipped even lower. “Let’s head back,” Dad said after a few minutes.

Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animal tracks I didn’t recognize. I followed them off the path for a closer look. There were no claw marks, which meant they didn’t belong to a dog or a fox. Instead, they looked like tiny handprints and footprints. Must be a raccoon(小熊), I thought.

I looked around when I suddenly realized I was totally alone.

Reaching a crossroads, I tried to calm myself down, picturing the map again.

Grandparents often have interesting names. My sister-in-law was known as Mimi. Her husband goes by Peeka. Why? Their firstborn grandchild decided on those names.

My firstborn grandchild named me as well. I will never forget the day Joshua hugged me and, in front of a roomful of people, called me “Doll. My Doll Baby!” From that point on, I was known as Doll or Doll Baby. Even my sons-in-law call me Doll. Friends of my children and grandchildren call me Doll. It’s a given.

For the most part, it’s fine, even endearing, to hear my grandchildren call me Doll. But there was one time… My daughter and her husband were going out of town, so the plan was for me to pick up five-year-old Spencer from kindergarten, take him to their house to wait for Joshua’s school bus, and bring both boys home to spend the night with us. Spencer and I arrived long before the school bus. While we waited for Joshua, Spencer wanted to show me a new trick he learned on his skateboard.

Spencer was pretty good. He had learned how to step on the back of the skateboard so that the front tipped up (一边翘起), and then put his front foot down on the board and take off. Cool!

Then it was my turn. I had played around with skateboards in my day. Of course, they weren’t the high-tech kind of toys my grandchildren enjoyed. Ours were made by mounting the wheels of our old sidewalk roller skates to the bottom of a plank of wood. Still, I had this. I put my right foot on the back of the board and tipped up the front. So far, so good. I brought my left foot down with every intention of rolling forward.

Good intentions. Bad form. I fell hard on my elbow as the skateboard flew across the concrete driveway. My injury was minor, but Spencer raced into the house and got Boo-Boo Bunny from the freezer to bring me comfort. It helped my arm, but not my pride.

When I made my way home safely with the boys, my husband blamed me.
