QS Asia University Rankings 2022

Featuring 687 institutions, our 2022 ranking of the top Asian universities is the biggest yet. As in last year’s rankings, it’s Mainland China that boasts the most universities—126 out of the 687 schools featured—with India and Japan in second and third place. This year also sees strong representation from South Korea.

No. 1 National University of Singapore (Singapore)

A leading global university centred in Asia, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore’s flagship university, which offers a global approach to education and research, with a focus on Asian perspectives and expertise. Over 38,000 students from 100 countries enrich the community with their diverse social and cultural perspectives.

No. 2 Peking University (Beijing, Mainland China)

The oldest higher education institution in China, Peking University (PKU) was founded in 1898. The university grounds are home to museums, such as the. Museum of University History and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology, in which students can view objects dating back thousands of years. It’s an environment to feed the enquiring minds of young students.

No. 3 The University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong, SAR China)

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has 6 subjects placed amongst Top 10 worldwide, while HKU Dentistry programme has been ranked 1st in the world for the second consecutive (连续的) years. For the last 11 years, more than 99.4% of our graduates have received at least one job offer in every academic year, with many embarking on careers in fields as diverse as finance, law, engineering and technology.

Hong Kong and Macau are home to several well-known universities that offer diverse courses and programs to students. Here are some of the universities and their key information.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU)

This university is one of the oldest and most prestigious in Asia, offering undergraduate, graduate, and research programs in various fields. Popular majors include business, engineering, law, and medicine. Admission requirements vary depending on the program, but all applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be fluent in English. HKU offers scholarships and financial assistance to both local and international students.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

This university is famous for its programs in science, engineering, and business. It also offers programs in social sciences and humanities. Admission requirements include high academic achievement and language proficiency (English). HKUST provides a range of scholarships and financial aid packages to deserving students.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

This university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in areas such as business, science, social sciences, and humanities. Admission requirements include academic performance, language proficiency (English and Chinese), and personal qualities. CUHK provides scholarships for students from different backgrounds and regions.

The University of Macau(UM)

This university is the only public comprehensive university in Macau, offering programs in business, science, social sciences, humanities, and education. Admission requirements vary depending on the program, but all applicants must be fluent in English or Portuguese (葡萄牙语). UM offers scholarships only for local students and does not provide accommodation for any students.

Attending a university is an important part of a person’s life. Today, many people go to a university to study and train for a future job in subjects like law, medicine, or education. But the university is not a modern invention. It has a history that is over a thousand years old.

The world’s oldest university, Al-Azhar, is in Cairo, Egypt. It was first built as a mosque (清真寺) in A.D. 972. A few years later, learners and teachers began meeting in the mosque in “tutoring circles” . They read and talked about the subject of law. Around 988, leaders in the city of Cairo decided to create a school for higher learning and the University of Al-Azhar was founded.

At Al-Azhar, there were many university “firsts”. Courses were created. The earliest ones taught at Al-Azhar were in law and religion. In a course, students read and studied with the teacher, but there was also free discussion. Often, students and teachers talked about a topic, and there was no “right” answer. Finally, scholars from around the world came to Al-Azhar to teach and do research. At the university, people studied the past, but it was also a place for sharing new ideas.

Over a thousand years later, Al-Azhar is still an important university in the world. Its library contains more than 250,000 of the world’s oldest and most valuable books. Today, many of the world’s most important universities such as Oxford and Harvard still follow the traditions started at Al-Azhar.
