Much like the popular TikTok challenge where kids resist eating snacks, cuttlefish can do the same! Cuttlefish can delay gratification(满足)—wait for a better meal rather than be tempted by the one at hand—and those that can wait longest also do better in a learning test, scientists have discovered.

This fascinating report marks the first time a link between self-control and intelligence has been found in an animal other than humans and chimpanzees. It is published this week in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The research was conducted by lead author Alexandra Schnell of University of Cambridge, at the Marine Biological Laboratory(MBL), Woods Hole.

“We used a slightly-changed version of the Stanford marshmallow(棉花糖) test in the 1970s, where children were given a choice of taking an immediate reward(1 marshmallow) or waiting to earn a delayed but better reward(2 marshmallows),” Schnell says. “Cuttlefish in the present study were all able to wait for the better reward and tolerated delays for up to 50—130 seconds, which is even comparable to what we see in large-brained vertebrates(脊椎动物) such as chimpanzees(黑猩猩), crows, and parrots.” Cuttlefish that could wait longer for a meal also showed better cognitive(认知的) performance in a learning task. In that experiment, cuttlefish were trained to associate a visual cue with a food reward. Then, the situation was the other way round, so the reward became associated with a different cue. “The cuttlefish that were quickest at learning both of those associations were better at keeping self-control.” Schnell says.

Why cuttlefish have evolved this capacity for self-control is a bit mysterious. Delayed gratification in humans is thought to strengthen social bonds between individuals—such as waiting to eat so a partner can eat first—which benefits the species as a whole. But whether it may also be a function of most animals still remains to be further explored.

Climate change has been blamed for killer hurricanes, sea level rise, and drought, but a new report suggests the effects of climate change might hit the world's coffee supply. Up to 70 percent of the world's coffee supply could be threatened over the next 66 years, according to a new study by researchers at England's Royal Botanic Gardens.

Nearly 100 percent of the world's arabica coffee growing regions could become unsuitable for the plant by 2080, according to the study. Beans from arabica coffee plants account for about70 percent of the world's coffee, but the plant has to be grown under strict weather conditions:they thrive at temperatures between 64 and 70 degrees Celsius, and are highly influenced by frost or temperatures higher than 73 degrees Celsius.

With temperatures estimated to increase by between 1.8 and 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, the fragile plant might become increasingly expensive and difficult to grow, especially in places such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In that worst case, nearly all of the world's native arabica coffee would die out. Under more conservative estimates, about 65 percent of the regions that used to grow the coffee would become unsuitable for it. The evidence from coffee farmers, from numerous coffee growing regions around the world, is that they are already suffering the influences of increased warming.

Some commercial farmers would likely be able to move their operations to other areas or would be able to overcome climate change with artificial cooling techniques, but wild arabica is generally considered to be much more suitable for making high-quality coffee.

If arabica becomes impossible to raise in its native areas, it could wreak havoc(造成破坏)on the economies of the mainly third-world countries in which it grows. Coffee is the world's most popular drink and is the second most-traded commodity in the world, behind oil.

【小题1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

B.65 percent of the world's coffee gets raw materials from arabica coffee plants.
C.Arabica coffee plants will grow well at temperatures lower than 60 degrees Celsius.
D.Coffee farmers are the biggest victims of climate change.
【小题3】What is the consequence if arabica coffee has less production?
A.Coffee will replace oil to be the first most-traded commodity.
B.Coffee is likely to become less popular than before.
C.Some countries will suffer great economic losses.
D.Farmers will plant other crops instead of coffee.

Each year more than 6 million dogs and cats end up in animal shelters, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day was designed to raise awareness about organizations’ work with homeless animals. Their main mission is to find homes for pets and reunite lost ones with their human families, but they need a lot of volunteer help.

“Not everyone has to have an animal in order to care about animals,” said Debra Duel of the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington. One way to help is to become a short-term foster (收养) family. Fostering frees up space in busy shelters. Adoptable pets get more personal attention once fostered in a loving home than in crowded shelter environments. “Fostering is great for people who can’t have a permanent pet,” Duel said. Fostering also helps people learn more about pet care before offering a forever home.

Victoria, now 12, has taken care of 49 animals since 2018. “Every animal is an individual,” Victoria said. “Each requires different work. Puppies or kittens require more time and training than older dogs and cats,” she said. “Even small animals like guinea pigs are more work than people think.”

If you really can’t foster, consider donating time, money and supplies to a shelter. Kindergartners at Browne Academy in Fairfax County did just that. They, in a partnership with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, raised several hundred dollars by drawing pictures of family pets that sold for S1 each. They also made cat toys and pillows. Their efforts helped improve the animals’ stay at the shelter, and they helped reduce adoption fees for people who can’t afford them.

Hopefully all those efforts will lead to fewer animals waiting for their forever homes.

D.People should think twice before fostering pets.
【小题3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Children’s role in charity events.B.A great need for animal adoption.
C.Problems animal shelters are faced with.D.Another way to help animals in shelters.

Scientists have already studied how dogs respond to people’s behavior and speech. But researchers are just scratching the surface of human-cat interactions. House eats do appear to respond to the expressions on people’s faces. Cats can also tell different human voices. But can cats recognize their own names?

Saito, a psychologist at Sophia University in Tokyo, and her colleagues decided to find the answer. They asked the owners of 77 cats to say four nouns of similar length followed by the cat’s name Cats gradually lost interest with each random (随机的) noun. But when the owner said a cat’s name, the cats reacted strong. They moved their ears, head or tail, changed their back paw position. And, of course, they meowed.

These findings mean that cats join the ranks of animals that have shown some sort of response in experiments to the names people give them. Those animals include dogs, dolphins, apes and parrots. It’s hard to compare across species, though. Some dogs, for example, can tell the difference between hundreds of human words.

The study makes a strong case that cats are perfectly capable of recognizing their own names. Getting a treat or hugs as a reward is part of how cats learn to recognize a name. However, owners may also use their cat’s name in a negative setting, like yelling at Fluffy to get off the stove. As a result, cats can probably learn to associate these familiar utterances with good and bad experiences, Saito notes. And that might not be great for cat-human relations. So only using a cats name in a positive context and using a different term in a negative context could help cats and humans communicate more clearly.

So cats may recognize their names. But will they come when called? Don’t get your hopes up.
