A big gathering of friends sat around our living room making music. “Get up there, Roberty Bob!” my mum Mary encouraged me. It was 1996, and aged five, I’d recently started Irish dance lessons with my two older sisters. I showed off some of the steps I’d learned in a shy and nervous way as the friends cheered.

We lived on an apple orchard (苹果园) in the Huon Valley, which had been in my dad’s family for generations. Mum had left her own family’s farm in Ireland after she met my father, Robert, while he was travelling around Europe. She vowed to never forget the culture of her homeland.

On nights like this one, friends and family would gather for a jam session (即兴演奏会). Many would bring instruments—tin whistles, Celtic drums, piano accordions — and produce a noisy Irish symphony (交响乐). Music was as much a part of my childhood as the country air I breathed.

When I turned 14, my parents gave me a guitar, and I began to suspect life would take me far beyond the bush. After school, I got into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) which led to a career in musical theatre. I had a ball performing in shows across Australia, like Disney’s Aladdin and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. During this period, I met a beautiful actress named Chloé Zuel and in 2019 we married. After COVID, I found it hard to get back to the former routine. Then, in April this year, I was sent an audition (试音) notice for a new musical about Elvis Presley set to tour Australia. We grew up with Irish and classical music, I thought. I knew nothing about Elvis. I figured they’d give the role to some Elvis fan and resolved to audition for smaller parts. Chloé disagreed and encouraged me to go for it though she was pregnant and needed company.

One day last week I woke up in a bad mood. Why? We were out of coffee. I was late paying a bill. My favorite clock had just stopped working. I even forgot to say “good morning” to my husband Bob. After all, we’ve been waking up together for 32 years. As usual, we both got out of bed and headed right to our desks.

I checked e-mail and replied to people who were complaining about rainy days as if we were all living

through an awful disaster. Then I noticed an e-mail from a fellow named John who first wrote to me a year ago. He was responding to a column I had written about relationship troubles that Bob and I had overcome:

“Hello Saralee. My wife Donna pointed out an article by you she found moving. It brought her to tears.

I’m a grown man who can be very emotional. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a happy ending and everything was fine. Few couples these days enjoy the closeness that you have with your husband. I am proud to say that I have been with my beloved for 26 years and she’s still the one.”

When I saw his name on this current e-mail, I was hoping to read more about his loving marriage. He wrote: “Two days ago my wife fell down a flight of stairs. I lost the only girl I will ever love. She was only 54 and in perfect health.” I stared at his words as my life was completely changed in less than one minute. I cried as I read the rest of John’s note: “She was an organ donor and I am told that because of her good health she can help as many as 50 people. It has been nice talking to you about the love of my life.”

I could hear Bob in his study. He was still in a bad mood. I asked him to come in and read John’s e-mail.

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues(同事) around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.

When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas!”was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus(圣诞老人) had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。

When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift—tennis rackets(网球拍)and balls, which was exciting, for we had never played tennis. However, there was no tennis court in the small town where we lived. One Saturday morning my brother excitedly suggested playing tennis against the school building. I agreed immediately, not realizing what a lesson we would learn.

When we reached the school ground, no one was around. We began hitting our balls against the school building. We took turns hitting the ball back and forth, soon becoming pretty good at it and hitting higher and faster. Suddenly, something unthinkable happened—the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows. We looked around and no one was in sight except an old man sitting on a porch halfway down the block.

Quietly, I asked my brother what to do. He looked around again. After confirming no one saw us, except that old man but he probably didn’t know who we were anyway, he suggested leaving secretly. “But should we tell Dad and Mum?” I asked again. A flash of worry came across his face. He was confused too. Carefully considering whether we should tell what had happened, we finally decided to pick up the rest of our balls and headed for home quietly.

Our mother was always in tune with her children. “What happened?” She asked as soon as she saw us. Looking into her eagle eyes, we had to admit what we had done. Hearing that, my mother screamed, “Oh, my goodness!” but soon calmly asked us to tell it to Dad. The moment Dad walked in the house, we both hurried to him and poured out our story. His response was typical. “Well, next Monday, I will call the school doorkeeper and see what we need to do. You will probably have to pay for the window.” We had two terribly worrying days to wait until our Dad got home from work on Monday.
