In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.

Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t wearing shoes and her ankles were swollen. She sat down with me and was very polite.” After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor?” Donaldson admitted that he was young and wasn’t focused on helping others. With a smile on her face, Mother Teresa said, “Everyone can do something.”

Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face hard truths about himself.

Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old, his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends meet, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my shoes and clothes. When you’re teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”

He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance.” However, it’s easy to overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didn’t have to confront (面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.

Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled to eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless. “My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”

Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America, Donaldson loaded a pick up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment, helping farmers and disaster services.

Eighteen-year-old Dana Kiger is happily running after balls on the soccer field. But not long ago, she couldn’t remember her love of the game, her parents’ faces or even her name.
At 16, the Tennessee honor student and star athlete was hit from behind while playing in a soccer game. She fell to the ground, her head striking the hard ground. The blow knocked out nearly all of Kiger’s memories.
With no physical(身体的) injury or unusual change in her brain, doctors thought Kiger’s memory would return in a few days. But it did not. And two and a half years later, it still hasn’t. Kiger—who has no memory of her family, her childhood or her life before her injury—has had to create new memories, restart relationships and relearn old skills.
“The only thing I had …I could walk, write, but I didn’t know what to write,” Kiger said of the days after the accident. “Physically, I was OK, I guess, but mentally(精神上) I was troubled.” Doctors say long-term amnesia(健忘症) brought on by a less severe brain injury like Kiger’s is unusual. “It’s very rare for people to have this lasting problem with memory recovering,” said Dr Roger Hartl at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Kiger’s parents tried to help their daughter return to the life she once lived. “She didn’t know what food was,” Kiger’s mom said. “She said, ‘What is that?’ I said, ‘Lettuce.” She said, ‘Do I like it?’ I said, ‘That’s up to you to decide.’”
Kiger’s natural ability on the soccer field was the one part of her earlier life that died immediately. And soon, she’ll begin a new life at Slippery Rock University, where she plans to study physical therapy(治疗). Kiger said that while parts of her past still remain a mystery, she’s focused(集中于) on what’s to come. “It is about my future,” she said.

My father, who was always drunk and angry, beat me more and more every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in his pocket. One day I found an old saw (锯子) that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house, I started to make a hole on the floor under the big table.

The next day my father said, "Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Quickly! And don't try anything. Remember, I’m watching you!"

While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.

"A boat!" I thought, happily, "This is my chance to escape. I'll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!"

When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.

"I did a good job, "I thought, looking at the hole. "Now I'll get my father's gun. I have a plan. "

I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly escaped through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. Luckily, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig's blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father's ax (斧子)with some of the pig's blood.

I took the pig's body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.

"This way people will think !" I thought. "They'll come and look for my body in the river." This idea made me smile.

I waited until it was dark and got into the boat and went to Jackson's Island. I knew about Jackson's Island because Tom, Ben, Joe and I had a lot of fun adventures there.

Noa Mintz has started her own nanny (保姆) agency since August 2012. She employed Allison Johnson in 2014 to take charge of day-to-day business operations while she attended her first year of high school. She rents a room in an office building in Midtown Manhattan where Johnson works.

Like any teenager, Noa has had to depend on her parents for some help. Her father is the registered owner of her business. He’s helped raise front money for legal fees. But Nannies by Noa is all her brainchild. The idea came about as a result of a challenge made by her mother: find a better nanny for their family.

She did just that, and then she started helping her mother’s friends find nannies. “I found it fun to get to know a family and their needs — and especially to find a nanny,” she said. So, Nannies by Noa was born. It was the summer of 2012, before she entered 7th grade.

She’s designed a thorough review process: an application, an in-person interview with a trained nanny, the reference and background check and a phone interview. Her business has seen a considerable success: from 50 clients (客户) in 2013 to 190 clients today.

At first, she charged $ 100 to $ 200. “I wasn’t charging enough. Even clients would say, ‘You realize you should be charging way, way more,’” added Noa, whose clients are mostly looking for long-term help. She’s changed her business model since: Nannies by Noa now takes a percentage of the overall rate, which is usually 15% of the nanny’s first year gross salary.

While Noa said she has other business ideas, she also would consider other careers. “Perhaps I’ll start another company. We will see,” said Noa.
