The editor of the new Cool Camping Britain guide chooses some of his favorite new finds in England, Wales and Scotland.

Is this Britain’s most beautiful campsite? From the grassy point looking seaward to the mountains, it’s not hard for campers to see how the island inspired The Lord of the Rings author’s fantasy landscapes. The campsite itself is as wild and wonderful as its setting.

Open April — September, from ￡5 per tent per night.

Deep in the wilds of north Suffolk, this seven-acre campsite has only been open for a few years, with two fields separated by a lake and surrounded by woodland. The position is perfect. It’s a great place to do nothing but get into nature. You can put up your tent in the bottom field or the woodland beyond.

Open Easter —October, from ￡10 per tent per night.

This site, by a lake, is all about simple pleasures. Located in the former mining village, it has a summerhouse（凉亭）with books and games for a rainy day. There are many animals including pigs, hens, goats and ducks on the farm and a pub just a 10- minute stroll away. There’s very little to do here, no bells and no whistles. Campfires are encouraged.

Its only campsite, Troytown, couldn’t be in a more remote position. Isolation is its greatest advantage — so bring plenty of books to read and don’t expect a phone signal. But at least one of life’s necessities is available. Lying on the hillside overlooking the bay and near the island of the Gugh, it might just win the prize for best beer garden view in England.

While known for its Pacific Ocean beaches and fashionable coastal towns, the Golden State is also home to many new and clean lakes where visitors can soak up the sun and cool off.

Shasta Lake

Shasta Lake is the largest reservoir in California at 30,000 acres wide. The lake is in Northern California and is a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Los Angeles. With 370 miles of shoreline, it’s no surprise that renting a houseboat is a popular activity. Depending on their location, visitors can enjoy the view of Mt. Shasta, which has snow on its peak year-round.

Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is another great option for those wanting to take a day trip from Los Angeles. It takes only two hours to drive there from downtown Los Angeles. Animal lovers can stop by the Big Bear Alpine Zoo to get an up-close look at the lake’s namesake (同名的物). The lake also has many hiking and biking trails along with plenty of fishing spots.

Lake Havasu

Lake Havasu is divided along the border of California and Arizona and is an oasis (绿洲) in the desert. It’s a five-hour drive from Los Angeles and a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Las Vegas. Visitors can fish or go boating on the lake that was formed from the Colorado River.

Mono Lake

Mono Lake is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains and spans more than 70 miles. It’s a five-hour drive from either Los Angeles or San Francisco. Visitors into fishing should head to a different lake because this body of water does not have any fish. It’s a salty lake, which means that it’s filled with saltwater and is two to three times saltier than the ocean.

Traveling by train may seem like a pain when there are faster ways to get around, but unless you’ve taken a long journey by train, there is no way you can begin to understand how amazing an experience it can be. Trains offer a certain romance (浪漫) which planes and cars never could.

Trains offer you a view like no other. When you fly in a plane, yes, the view is breathtaking for the first part of the flight and the final part, but the flight itself means pretty much clouds or darkness—both of which get real boring and real fast. And by car, the actual act of driving and navigating (导航) means that you don’t really get to fully take things in. The train offers a comfy (轻松的) spot that gives you the chance to relax and enjoy the beauty around you. Many have said that they’d never known how beautiful their own country is until having the chance to see it from the train. There is something magical about travelling around the country using one of the oldest known methods of transportation. It’s so...Orient Express...without the murder of course!

Imagine travelling along the beautiful countryside of Portugal or Austria in a compartment. The quiet setting, the history and the magic is enough to take your breath away. That really is the ultimate in travel.
