Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym.

Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist.

In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!

When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. ” It’s just the beginning, “she thought.” I’ll come in last for sure. “

Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word” mile. “Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.

It was midnight on Dec. 4. Harrison Bentzen, a student at the University of Central Lancashire, had been working on her final exam in the library and was ready to go back home for a good sleep. As she reached the bus stop, she found her bank card was missing. She searched her bag, only to find she was out of cash. It was still dark and rather cold. Her home was 20 miles away and it was impossible for her to walk home. Tired and cold, she had no idea how she was going back home.

At that time, a nearby homeless man noticed what had happened to her and was concerned for her safety. He approached Harrison with £3 in hand,“ Miss, this is all I’ve got. Take it! Get a cab!”   Harrison was deeply moved by how a homeless man with nothing could offer her his last bit of money just to help her get home. She was deeply grateful for his kindness, but could not accept the homeless man’s last bit of money.

She declined the offer, but the homeless man’s act of kindness stayed in Harrison’s mind and heart the following week, and finally she decided to try and find him again so that she could somehow repay his kindness.

She set on a mission to find this homeless man. While searching, she learned that his name was Robbie and he was regularly kind to people around. “The more I spoke about him, the more good deeds I learned about him, such as him returning wallets untouched to pedestrians,” Harrison later posted the story on her Facebook.

Harrison eventually found the kind homeless man and was able to thank him, and she learned about his situation. “He has been homeless for 7 months and needs to get back on his feet but cannot get work due to having no address…I decided to help him get off the streets and into a flat,” Harrison wrote.

Sometime in 1957, Annie, my grandma, had both her kids. My mom was her firstborn followed by my uncle soon after. Grandma decided to look for a brave business journey in coffee industry where no women held any position. She didn’t like the fact that Grandpa had to work for some other company to make a living. So she moved 100km away from where Grandpa used to live and bought a piece of land with 2 kids to support to start her own coffee farm.

As my mom and uncle grew and were school going in the nearby village, this brave woman, Annie, worked endlessly in the land planting one coffee plant after another. By the time my mom and uncle were in Grade 2, she had planted about 12 acres of coffee plants all alone.

This journey was not easy; Grandpa was home only on Saturdays and Sundays, when he had leave from work. Grandma barely slept through the nights from 1957 until 1963, guarding her land, her resources and children. At last, Grandpa gave up his job and came to support Grandma both emotionally and physically.

She realized she had created a large farm now and couldn’t just use herself and her kids to work to maintain and grow the land. So, by the time my mom and uncle were in Grade 5, Grandma decided the education in village school wasn’t good enough to her kids and sent them off to Mangalore to study and enjoy a town life with their cousins.

Sometime in 1965, Grandma decided to go shopping for labour. She picked up the workers’ families to work for the farm, often driving the tractor on her own every morning to bring labour to her farm before 7:30 am. As age caught on, it was difficult to pick up and drop workers every morning and every evening.

It was a pleasant Sunday as John wandered the garden of his uncle’s house. His parents had gone to Delhi.

“Your final examination is just a few months away.” John’s father had said. “We want you to stay with Uncle Tim, complete your exams and join us in Delhi.” Uncle Tim was John’s father’s cousin. He had a little dog called Oliver.

From the first day John realized that Oliver was unhappy in the house. He was not given his meals on time, nor was he taken for a walk. Oliver was shouted at and abused all day. “Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could protect his house from thieves but actually he doesn’t love him”, the gardener told John one day.

John felt sad. At night he could hear Oliver whimpering in the cold. “Why don’t you make a coat for your pet?” John paused and said, “He feels cold”. His uncle answered, “I have much better things to do”.

One day John went out for a walk with Oliver, when a fierce storm started. John ran to take shelter in a sweet shop. It was only after a few minutes that he realized that Oliver was not with him. “The storm separated us”, John was sad, telling his uncle. “I searched the entire place with the help of the sweet shop owner but I couldn’t find him.” John’s uncle posted an advertisement in the paper. After all he had spent a lot of money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.

It was a half-hour ride by bus. The middle aged lady who greeted Oliver was a motherly sort of a woman. She and her husband had answered John’s uncle’s advertisement in the paper. Since John’s uncle was out on an official tour, John had been sent to check on the dog. “He is asleep,” the lady said. “Come and have a look, we love him so much that he is just like our dead dog, Sheela.”
