Easy Ways to Build Vocabulary

It’s not all that hard to build an advanced and large vocabulary. Like many things in life, it’s 【小题1】 ongoing process, and the best part of the process is that there’s enough room for improvement, 【小题2】means you’ll just keep getting better and better. Of course you have to work at it. You wouldn’t think that a few 【小题3】(month) of exercise in your teens would be enough【小题4】the rest of your life, and that’s also true for building your vocabulary---you have to keep at it daily,   【小题5】pretty soon you will find that you have an excellent vocabulary. One of the effective ways to build vocabulary is to read good books. You need to【小题6】 (real) read at least one good book a week, preferably a classic. This isn’t as hard as it【小题7】 (sound), and it is far better than any other method because you improve your vocabulary while 【小题8】 (read) an interesting piece of literature. Another nice thing is that you learn both new words and【小题9】 (they) use unconsciously, meaning that you will tend to use the words 【小题10】 (learn) this way in conversations almost automatically.

In the study, researchers surveyed students about their reading materials, and they also took a writing sample from their cover letters. Upon analyzing their【小题2】 (find), researchers concluded that students who read academic journals and literary fiction scored 【小题3】 (high) in measures of writing complexity than those who 【小题4】 (primary) read popular fiction or web content. Although the study didn’t investigate why a link between reading material and writing ability exists, the authors suggest our writing may simply imitate what we read.

However, Andrew Jarosz, 【小题5】 psychology professor, says this study had a relatively small sample size and that it’s too soon 【小题6】 (conclude) that the complexity of the material we read 【小题7】 (affect) the complexity of our writing.

“It could indeed be that reading complex materials leads to more complex writing,” he said. “Alternatively, what if those who are better writers prefer to read complex materials that mirror their own writing abilities? That is, 【小题8】 is entirely possible that the relationship goes in the other direction.”

Jarosz says other variables (可变因素) may also be responsible 【小题9】 why some people write at a higher level than others, 【小题10】 (include) intelligence and the ability to store and process information at the same time.
