Could the Moon Help Fuel the Earth?

Fossil fuels have been powering the earth for over 200 years, but reserves of coal, crude oil (原油) and natural gas may run out one day.

The long-term solution may lie nearly half of a million kilometers away on the moon. It contains large quantities of helium-3 (氦-3), a form of gas that could 【小题1】 (potential) be extracted (提炼), brought back to the earth and used as fuel without damaging the environment.

“The real 【小题2】 (attract) of helium-3 is that it is a nuclear process, 【小题3】 doesn’t release any greenhouse gases,” said 【小题4】 engineering professor. “That would be the 【小题5】 (big) advantage-nuclear power without nuclear waste, and it would be a goal for the earth.”

Present on the earth in small quantities, helium-3 【小题6】 (use) in medical diagnostics (医学诊断), but it is yet to be used as a source of energy. However, there are large enough quantities of helium-3 on the moon to power the earth for a thousand of years or so and provide the earth 【小题7】 all of the energy.

But 【小题8】 (bring) helium-3 back to the earth is a complex process. The gas, 【小题9】 (find) in the moon’s soil, would need to be heated to 600℃ before being extracted and transported back to be turned into fuel in nuclear power 【小题10】 (plant). Even so, the project is beginning to interest some of the world’s leading nations in the environmental and economic potential of helium-3.

Instead of lying awake worrying, we’re often told to “sleep on it” when making big or small decisions. There’s actually a scientific basis for this advice.

Sleep 【小题1】 influence our response to emotional situations, and helps us to manage our mental health. To understand 【小题2】 sleep and emotions are so connected, it’s important to first understand what happens in the brain when we come across 【小题3】 emotive.

Two main brain regions interact to create emotional responses. The first is the limbic system (边缘系统) 【小题4】 (locate ) deep in our brain. This acts as our emotion center, 【小题5】 quickly considers a situation to make a judgement about it and helps us to decide how to react. It helps us react quickly in certain situations—for example, when we come across a dangerous animal.

But most of the time we need to adjust our immediate emotional response. This is where the second region—the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质)—comes in. Located just behind our forehead, this region 【小题6】 (help) us to increase or decrease our emotional responses as necessary. So if we see a predator (such as a bear) in the zoo, the prefrontal cortex tells us we don’t need to panic 【小题7】 it’s in a cage.

These regions need to be well-connected 【小题8】 effectively generate and adjust our emotional responses. This is where sleep comes in. When we’re sleep deprived (睡眠不足), the connections between these areas weaken, making the reaction in the limbic system 【小题9】 (strong). Sleep loss not only increases our reaction 【小题10】 stressful events during the day, but it also makes these reactions harder to change.

As China plays an【小题1】(increasing) important role on the global stage, the Chinese language is exerting (施加) its influence 【小题2】English, according to a recent report by the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration. The report is based on a survey【小题3】(conduct) by the CFLPA and the Horizon Research Consultancy Group, both based in Beijing.

The survey was designed 【小题4】(find) out to what extent the Chinese language Romanized in the form of pinyin is known and understood by people in eight major English-speaking 【小题5】(country)—Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, Singapore and the Philippines—through media reports, schools and cultural exchanges.

Researchers first【小题6】 (choose) more than 300 Chinese words and terms, and counted the number of times【小题7】(they) pinyin were mentioned in reports of 50 mainstream media outlets in the eight countries over the past five years,【小题8】(include) the New York Times, the Washington Post, the BBC, the Guardian, the Straits Times and India Today.

【小题9】researchers then selected 150 words and terms【小题10】were more frequently used, and surveyed 1,260 interviewees from the eight countries with a bachelor’s degree or above.

The survey included words and terms in three major categories, all related to China: politics, society, and history and culture.
