Winter sports have lots of fun! But you have to know how to be safe.

Fun in the sun

Sunscreen (防晒霜) may look funny in wintertime, but don’ t forget to put it on. Sunlight re - flects off all that bright white snow and ice and back onto your face. That’ s why you need to cover up with sunscreen, and lip balm (润唇膏) even if it’ s cloudy outside.

Sled safety

Going down a hill at an amazing speed can be great. But you must be safe when you’ re sledding. When you choose your sled (雪橇), make sure it’ s strong and safe. Never use things from home like garbage - can lids, plastic bags or pool floats for sleighs (雪橇). These are dangerous while you’ re sledding. At the age of 95, Olga Kotelko attracted great attention at the World Masters Athletics Championships. This 5ft-tall Canadian became the oldest recorded woman indoor runner, high jumper and long jumper at the competition.
Olga now has more than 30 world records to her name and has won more than 750 gold medals. But she sees herself as nothing special, describing herself as just a plain Jane. As one of 11 children brought up on a farm, she has always been active, milking cows and doing other housework.
She has now outlived all her brothers and sisters and most of her friends but when asked what her secret is, she says there isn’t one. “I think your age is just a number. It’s not your birthday; it’s how you age that makes the difference. It’s your attitude to all the things that happen in your life that plays the biggest part.”
So can we all turn ourselves into nonagenarian (九十多岁的) superheroes? Research from Newcastle University suggests that as every 24 hours pass, we add an extra five hours to our lives — that’s over 2 months each year—partly because of improving living conditions and medical development. And in the UK the number of people who are living into their 100th year has nearly increased by four times since the 1980s. So ageing is not a terrible thing.
While Olga’s genes (基因) might help her, we’re not all prisoners to our own. After all, 75% of our later lives could be down to the lifestyle we choose to lead. A good diet (饮食) and regular exercise are key. Besides, developing friendships in mid-life also works. Dr Holland, director of Aston University’s research centre for healthy ageing, says: “The more friends you have when you’re 50-60 years old, the less likely you’re to be lonely in later life; the less lonely you are, the less likely you’re to be ill as the years go by.”

One of the best parts of the school day is the time spent in the playground. It’s a chance to be with friends, run around and have fun. However, at the Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Brighton, things were getting too hard, so the teachers decided something had to be done. The school’s new rules, which restrict(限制)physical activities and encourage pupils only to touch if they are playing friendlier games, have attracted a lot of attention.

Most people say that they are a bad restriction. Parents of children at the school, in Brighton, East Sussex, talked about the bizarre rule —   saying their kids were now bored at playtime. A teacher for the school defended(辩护)the rules, saying, “We want to make sure the playground is a happy, safe and calm place where everyone can enjoy their lunchtime running around and getting the exercise that we know is important to them.”

Some people say that Rudyard Kipling Primary School’s decision is a good one because it makes the playground more fun for everyone. Not all children enjoy playing rough(剧烈的)games or sports at playtime. Friendlier games ensure everyone can join in. The teachers only have the pupils’ best interests at heart, so they should be trusted to make the right decision. Besides, if someone gets hurt in the playground, that                    could distract(分心)the teachers from other accidents.

However, some people think it’s an overreaction. Sometimes physical games can lead to injuries, but banning(禁止)such activities is unreasonable. In fact, it is only during physical games that you can build up your ability to recover quickly from falling over. Even if these physical activities aren’t your favorite way to spend break time, it’s difficult to see why they will be completely banned. Each pupil should be able to decide what they want to do. Besides, schools should be happy that their students want to exercise between classes as this will keep them fit and healthy, and teachers should encourage this, not prevent it.
