In March of 1994, I was 25 years old, poor and pregnant. It was 10 days past my due date. I was dependent on public transportation to get to my prenatal (产前的) appointments. That day I was going with my husband to the hospital for an ultrasound (超声波) scan.

We were excited and happy, thinking a new life would come into our world soon. To reach the bus stop, we had to cross a busy street. While we were standing on the opposite side of the street waiting for a break in traffic, we saw the bus coming. There was a huge rush of traffic just then, and no way to cross the street in time.

We began shouting loudly and waving wildly trying to flag down the driver. But the driver didn’t notice us, since her face wasn’t turned toward us. She drove quickly past the stop and down the street. Traffic cleared up immediately after this and we were able to cross the street. But it was a moment too late.

We were very anxious because this was the last bus we could have caught to get to my appointment on time. The hospital was very strict about its appointment policy— if you were ten minutes late, you had to reschedule. Rescheduling meant I had to wait a day or more. I was close to tears, about to say “Let’s go home” when a police car stopped in front of us. The officer had apparently seen the whole process, and said with a smile “Hop in- let’s catch the bus!”

We’d never been in trouble nor were we thieves, but we naturally felt uneasy about most authority figures like policemen. So it was a shock to receive this offer of help from an unlikely source! Should we accept such help? We hesitated for a second. Then we got in the car, and the officer sped toward our runaway bus.

Sticking together was always important to my family — especially after my dad left us. I didn’t always talk to my mom about my feelings, because she was busy tending our farm. I talked to my sister, Alana, and I talked to Sister Belle — that’s what we called our cow. She was definitely part of my family, and we loved her very much.

Later on, as we needed to move, we had to sell our farm and all the animals, including Sister Belle. We wanted her to go to someone who would love her like we did, and we thought it was an answer to our hope when a man called. He told he could only pay 300 dollars, but that he had lots of pasture (牧场) and a large barn (畜棚). That afternoon, we went to his place. It looked really nice, and we were happy that we had found the right home for Sister Belle.

The next day we delivered Sister Belle to her new owner. I could feel tears stinging my eyes, but I convinced myself that Sister Belle would be better off in her new home.

A week later, while we were having our moving sale, a neighbor came up telling us she had seen our cow before the cow went to auction (拍卖会). My mom couldn’t believe it and asked who was sell ng the cow. When knowing who it was, I felt sick. We had trusted him, and just a week later he was selling Sister Belle away to make a profit!

We drove to his house. When he answered the door, mom told him what the neighbor had said and he shut the door right in our faces. Alana was crying, and my mom was begging him to sell Sister Belle back to us. But he wouldn’t open the door.

Back home, my mother started calling a lot of auctions and finally found one that had a record of our cow, and told us the cow would be auctioned off the next morning.

The Quarrel

Coretti got a prize and I did not. However, it wasn’t out of envy that I quarreled with him this morning.

When I was writing in my copy-book for calligraphy this morning, Coretti jogged (轻碰) my arm and spoiled (破坏) my paper. I said a rude word to him angrily. He smiled, “I did not do it intentionally.” I should have believed him, because I know him; but it displeased me that he should smile, and I thought: “Now that he has had a prize, he has grown rude!”

After a while, to revenge (为……报仇) myself, I jogged him to spoil his paper. “Enrico, you did that on purpose!” he said to me. He raised his hand but drew it back when the teacher saw it. Then he added, “I shall wait for you outside!” Now my anger died down and I felt sorry. No, Coretti could not have done it intentionally. He is good, I thought. I recalled how he had worked and helped his sick mother in his own home; and then how heartily he had been welcomed in my house; and how he had pleased my father. And I thought of the advice given by my father—“If you do something wrong, do apologize!” But I did not dare to.

I was ashamed to say “sorry”. Looking at Coretti out of the corner of my eye, I felt I loved him. I said to myself, “Courage!” But the words “excuse me” stuck in my throat. He glanced at me from time to time, and he seemed to be more sorrowful than angry. But at such times I looked directly into him to show that I was not afraid. He repeated, “We shall meet outside!” And I said, “We shall meet outside!”

At last school was over.

It was a Friday afternoon in July, the last day of term. The school holidays were starting. Six weeks of freedom! Jenny was walking home in the hot sun. She always thought, “Is this just a nice day, or is it global warming?” But today she was happy and laughing, and full of plans for the holidays like going to the seaside, hanging out in the park, going to the cinema, and just lying in bed in the morning, doing nothing.

Later, at dinner, with the cooked chicken on the table, her family were talking about cars. Jenny said, “Dad, your car makes too much noise and causes too much pollution. You had better change it for a new one.” Her father agreed with her and said that he was tired of going to work by car every day. He decided to work at home sometimes, but it meant he was going to need an office. “Which room are you going to use?” asked Jenny. “Well, I need a lot of space. I will cut the old tree at the end of the garden and build a new office there.” Jenny said, “No! Please don’t cut the old tree!”But her father insisted, “Sorry. I have to.” Jenny was shocked. Her face turned red with anger, her eyes flashing. “That’s so unfair!” Jenny said, jumping up. She walked quickly to the door and said, “I’m leaving home. I will go to my grandpa who understands and cares about me!” Then she walked out. “Bang!” She shut the door behind her angrily.

Jenny ran up to her room. She was so upset that she couldn’t help sobbing. She couldn’t believe what she had heard. The old tree and her tree house! With tears in her eyes, she emptied her school bag and filled it up with clothes, her MP3 player, and her favorite books. Jenny waked quickly down the stairs towards the front door. But then she stopped. She couldn’t leave home. They were going to cut down her tree! What could she do?
