CWA Photo Competition 2023
Over the last year, opportunities for visits to historical sites have picked up again, and photography offers a wonderful way to experience the sights of archaeology (考古学) around the world. Whether you’ve been looking back at photos from previous holidays, going out to sites near you, or busy working on archaeological projects, we want to see your best photos on a heritage theme. Send them to us for your chance to win first prize in our yearly CWA Photo Competition and have your work showed in the magazine.
The winning image and 3 runners-up will be featured in CWA and at the CA Live conference in London in 2023. The overall winner will get two free tickets to the conference.
Closing date: 1 February 2023
The judges’ decision is final, and the results of prize-winners will be announced by 15 February 2023.
Rules:
☆Entrants (参赛者) can offer no more than 5 images with an archaeological theme — please include details of the place or item photographed, when each image was taken, and your contact information, including a postal address.
☆Entrants must be 18 or over. The competition is open to all photographers.
Professional and nonprofessional photographs will not be judged separately.
☆All photos entered must be done under an individual’s name. By submitting (提交) images you confirm that you are the copyright holder and creator of the images.

The FIFA World Cup 2022, the world’s greatest football tournament, is set to begin in Qatar on November 21, 2022.
The FIFA World Cup is being held in the Middle East for the first time and is being hosted by an Asian country for the second time. The nation, which draws visitors from all around the world, promises to host the most expensive World Cup ever.
By land size, Qatar is the smallest nation to have ever hosted a FIFA World Cup. Switzerland, which hosted the 1954 FIFA World Cup, is the next-smallest nation. Qatar became the second nation to host the major competition without ever making it to an earlier round of competition. Qatar has a population of 2.8 million, which is comparable to that of Yorkshire. However, because of its size, it has the highest per capita income in the world.
A FIFA World Cup is an expensive event, and since 1994, there has been a general upward trend in the costs connected with hosting the most famous tournament.
The nation has already spent around $200 billion. The nation spends $500 million per week on infrastructure(基础设施) projects, new stadiums, hotels, hospitals, and airports. According to Qatar’s finance minister, Ali Shareef AI-Emadi, preparations for the World Cup are almost complete.
A huge amount of soccer fans are expected to arrive in the country (about 1.2— 1.5 million). Due to concerns about a shortage of housing, the nation has already spent $40 million on hotels.
The estimated cost of Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup is $220 billion. The historic tournament’s most costly edition is expected to be this one. Fans are surprised with the World Cup’s luxury and fascination, but there is also plenty of controversy(争议).

Non-native animals are doing great damage to local economies and ecosystems. Governments try to use all kinds of ways to keep these animals from going into their places. Some local governments try to make removing invasive(侵入的) species by holding contests with prizes for whoever can catch the most of these animals. In 2022, for example, one fishing contest will be open to the public.

China Daily and its Discover Beautiful China platform (dbc.chinaservicesinfo.com), China Daily Website and China Daily App are calling for submissions (提交) of photos and videos from now until 30 December 2022.
Organizations and individuals, both in China and around the world, are welcome to share with us works describing the beautiful country of China.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Photos or short videos with four major themes:
•Sceneries of China
•Cityscapes in China
•Customs unique to China
•Cultural heritage of China
Languages in either English or Chinese are preferred.
WHAT YOU CAN GET
Among prizes/awards to be given to the individual winners, we offer a top prize of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,496). Some of the best works have a chance to be featured on the China Daily Website, dbc.chinaservicesinfo.com, and China Daily App (with 37 million users).
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
1. Photos
No more than 10 photos, 5 MB at most for each; with a caption (说明文字) of up to 200 words; format (格式) in JPG or PNG
2. Videos
Format: MP4 or MOV
Size: 1 GB at most, less than 4 minutes
Caption: 200-500 English or Chinese words to give a brief introduction
