New rules for middle school students came out in March. Middle schools are going to use a new way to decide who the top students are.
◆ Tell the truth. Have you ever cheated in an exam?
◆ Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You should join!
◆ Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll find another earth in space in the future.
◆ Protect yourself. Has a thief ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don’t let it happen to you. If you have to go back home late, you should let your parents know.
◆ Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your study.
A.Don’t do it again! |
B.Everyone’s new ideas are important |
C.Students must only work and play alone. |
D.Students should not disagree with the teachers. |
E.The best students won’t only have high marks. |

Choosing a college major is one of the most important choices you can make about your education and future career.
There are a number of steps you can take before making a final decision.
Next, consider the academic subjects in which you excel(优秀). If you’re not strong in math you might be better off not choosing engineering. If you are good at English you might choose to become an author or a journalist.
Once you’ve established a list of potential career fields, research them further to determine which college majors are most proper. Then you can get an idea for what courses you’ll need to take.
Choosing a college major you will enjoy is important. You might find college life to be less stressful if you enjoy your classes.
A.Your teacher is there to help with just this sort of dilemma. |
B.If you struggle with these steps, consider looking for outside help. |
C.It may even be more important than where you attend college. |
D.Your future career choices may rely heavily on what you study in college. |
E.You might also avoid the unpleasantness that comes with changing your major. |
F.Compare the list of your interests with the list of your talents and see which fields overlap (交叉). |
G.Begin by making a list of your personal interests and careers which correspond with them. |
I was ever bullied badly when I was in high school. One kid in particular would try to make me feel worse in every way he knew. For example, he would throw stuff at me constantly, hit me on the head, punch(殴打)me, call me ugly and stupid, make fun of me and, of course tell me he would beat me up if I ever fought back. It was like his daily mission.
And it was my daily mission to just get through the day. What could I say? It made my world very small because that was my main focus---just surviving. Everything else fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, that included any form of social life. So not only was my world tiny, but it was very lonely.
Looking back to that time, which was about 11 years ago, my biggest mistake was not bringing anyone into that world of mine. I was too proud (and embarrassed) to get help. I would rather not face the fact that I needed help because in my mind, that would mean that the bully won. It would also mean that I was weak.
Let me just say this: bullying someone is a weak choice. The only reason why they come after you is that they think you won't do anything about it. Does that make anyone strong? Absolutely not. Be stronger---ask a parent, a teacher or a friend for help. Simply admit that you are struggling and need help.
You can put it like this, "Somebody who is weak and trying to build himself or herself up has chosen to do that by putting me down. The only reason why they are doing that is that I am nice and I haven't done anything about it yet. Well I am through putting up with this. I have basic human rights that they are trying to take away to feel better and that is just not OK. How do I handle this? I don't want the pain cycle to continue and I don't want to become someone I don't want to be.

High school is difficult for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in (适应) right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the school. Joining a club forces you to communicate with people who have similar interests as you. Even if you are the shyest and quietest person, you are sure to develop a relationship with at least one person in the club that you decide to join. Speaking from personal experience, I have met some of my best friends from my extra-curricular activities and had many new doors open to me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications. Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait (特质); it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined, and best of all try new things. Another nice thing is that (depending on the activity) it could help you develop skills that you could use during a college interview.
Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prevent this. Teens are also very easy to influence and if they fall in with the wrong crowd they may have to face consequences (后果) such as problems with the law. Clubs are a great place to spend time and be with good people who you can fall back on if you need them.
Maybe the most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefit (益处) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, keeping an eye on the time, and being organized are things you will use every single day of your life.
