As Tiger King 2 appeals to viewers, some fans feel sad about having to pay much for another streaming service subscription. And they take pity on the once-hot video technology which is now more likely to be a temporary coaster (杯垫) for your coffee: DVDs were once the future, but now the industry can hardly be turned around.

DVD sales once reached $16.3 billion and were 64% of the U.S. home video market. That was 2005.

However, this year just 300 million DVDs are expected to be sold worldwide, down from an average of 2 billion every year between 2005 and 2009. Instead, a rise in customers buying on-demand and digital copies of films and the launch of streaming services are what have reduced the DVD industry to such a state.

But there are still 300 million of the things, even if your collection is gathering dust on the bookshelf. While pop psychology would suggest that older generations hold on to their love of the physical disc, instead, those aged 25 to 39 are more likely than most to watch DVDs. They’re often collectors.

“DVDs are a sign of our identity and our personality,” says Tony Gunnarsson, an analyst of TV, video, and advertising. That’s why England-based radio producer Tom Green still stores around 300 DVDs, including the whole seasons of The Simpsons. They represent a part of my life, and a part of me,” Green says. Others continue to keep DVDs because of the excellent audio (声音的) quality.

For DVDs, to undergo a renaissance (复兴) similar to that experienced by cassette tapes will require a big shift. “We need to wait for the generation that have a fascination with DVDs to control the mainstream culture, but it seems to be nowhere in sight,” says Tom Green. “And the public see DVDs as nothing but outdated media.” Even so, there is a solid group of DVD consumers. And that’s perhaps why producers keep making DVDs and why committed collectors collect their discs.

In today's Internet age, online games can be a change from the pressure of school and work. However, they can also cause problems and unhealthy addictions. This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. This country has the world's highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It has also a high number of game players who are addicted to online games.

In 2004, a young man died after playing online games almost nonstop for 86 hours. A 12-year-old boy stole $16,000 from his father to continue online games which he could not get away from. Such problems are spreading to other parts of Asia as well. In 2005, it was reported that about 80 percent of China's 13.8 million online game players were under 25.

And many of these were said to be addicted. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.

Dr. Sue-Huei Chen, a psychologist(心理学家), discovered some signs of at-risk people. Such people often go online to escape from their problems. And they usually have no friendship or good social skills. They feel the need to spend more and more time online, so they may be absent from school or family. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.

Empathy begins with awareness of another person’s feelings. Once we have figured out how another person feels, we show empathy by acknowledging the emotion or through a simple sign of affection such as a hug or a tender touch. Though empathy is usually used in reference to sensing someone else’s painful feelings, it can also apply to someone’s positive feelings. In this case, a “high five” would also be a sign of empathy.

It is likely that empathy decreases with age. In other words, I suspect that children are by nature relatively empathetic and they slowly lose their feelings of empathy.

There is the socialization process which may lead to a drop in empathy. This could be happening for several reasons. For instance, I have noticed that I cannot feel empathy for someone if I am preoccupied with my own needs. It makes sense, then, that if they grow up with many unmet emotional needs, these children will slowly become more concerned with their own interests in general, and less able to empathize with the troubles of someone else.

Another factor that could be contributing to a drop in empathy is the general low value which society places on feelings and emotions. Not until recently do people seem to have appreciated the value of our feelings and emotions. I certainly say that this concept was never introduced to me in my formal education. The higher education system, the more emphasis is placed on the intellectual, cognitive brain, which seems to be at the expense of the development of the emotional brain.

Finally, when we are children we are instructed to control our feelings and the expression of emotion. We are told that this is part of what it means to be “mature”. We are led to believe that emotions are irrational, signs of weakness, femininity, etc. All of this would tend to lower our empathy.

For those not familiar,"hygge"refers to the Danish lifestyle that's popular across the world and is described as a feeling of comfort and contentment,as well as indulging(沉迷)in all the good things and people in your life.

Hygge has focused largely on the idea of making the ordinary special,or meaningful, through ritualising(使仪式化)everyday activities such as making a cup of coffee or having dinner;that means putting technology to one side, and adopting simple practices such as lighting candles, purchasing flowers,or making real tea in china cups.

Of course,Denmark's use of"hygge"is particularly useful in battling with the country's harsh winters;with up to 17 hours of darkness a day potentially having deeply negative effects on the mental health of its citizens.Susanne Nilsson,a Danish lecturer at London's Morley College, explained to the BBC,"We have long, cold winters in Denmark. That influences things.Hygge doesn't have to be a winter-only thing, but the weather isn't that good for much of the year."

"Hygge could be families and friends getting together for a meal, with the lighting dimmed(变昏暗),or it could be time spent on your own reading a good book,"she added. "It works best when there's not too large an empty space around the person or people."

The word hygge didn't actually originate from the Danish language, but from Norwegian, where the word originally meant something similar to"well-being".However, it spread to Denmark in the 18th century and has since become an essential part of the country's culture and self-identity.
