China has built in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, the Germplasm (种质) Bank of Wild Species, a comprehensive national database for the collection and preservation of wildlife germplasm resources. As of the end of 2020, the bank preserved 85,046 copies of 10,601 wild plant seeds for protecting wildlife germplasm resources. Preserving dried and frozen seeds, the bank provides technological support for the protection and research, makes use of China’s wildlife germplasm resources, and plays a major part in international biodiversity conservation.

The importance of science and technology for biodiversity conservation is increasingly obvious. When remote sensor monitoring was not available, agricultural technicians had no choice but to go for field studies, which could barely meet the need for large-scale, fast and nondestructive (非破坏性的) monitoring of crop conditions and timely prevention and control of diseases and pests. Nowadays, remote sensor monitoring has been applied in agricultural production in China, allowing agricultural technicians to analyze the movements of insect pests and evaluate plant diseases and insect pests by monitoring remotely the vegetation growth, coverage, surface temperature, humidity and other indicators.

In the Internet era, information technology has made the processing of massive data possible and created wider and more convenient platforms for biodiversity conservation in China, including Chinese Virtual Herbarium, Plant Photo Bank of China, and National Animal Collection Resource Center. The emergence of databases and digital programs in recent years is driving China to turn around its seriously threatened biodiversity.

From the collection and storage of information to the management and analysis of resources, the constantly improving biodiversity information network has realized the exploration and use of massive biodiversity data, providing a solid foundation for China’s biodiversity conservation and research. Biodiversity conservation and science and technology are inextricable. Only by making science and technology a strong support for biodiversity conservation can humankind guard the Earth and build a beautiful world of harmony among all beings on the planet.

New technology is making it possible for people to make videos of people appearing to say things they never actually said. The videos are known as “deepfakes”.

The word “deepfake” is a combination of “deep learning”(an important part of artificial intelligence) and “fake” (not real). Deepfake software allows people to replace part of a video with another video image. The result is a fake video.

The software allows you to put your face over the face of a talking president or movie star. This process will make your face speak in the voice of that president or movie star. Many people are worried the technology will be used to trick voters. Lawmakers, intelligence officials and media experts have expressed concern about deepfakes. They warn the false videos could be used to threaten America’s national security.

“We have entered a new world where it is going to be difficult to know how to believe what we see,” said Hany Farid, a researcher at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He added, “the opposite result is also worrying. People will become so used to seeing false videos that they will be more likely to doubt a real video. ”

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) is already working to develop technologies to identify fake images and videos. But Senator Rubio says, now the identification is difficult and takes a very long time.

“It takes advanced technology to be able to show that it’s not real. And by the time that’s done, it’s been widely used.”

Rubio and other lawmakers say people will need to take more responsibility to identify fakes.

【小题2】Why was Hany Farid worried?
A.False videos might mislead people.
B.It was too difficult to use the software.
C.Private information might be given away.
D.Some people might be addicted to “deepfakes”.
【小题3】What can we know from Rubio’s words?
A.It is really difficult to identify fake videos.
B.The technology “deepfake” has been banned.
C.The government is responsible for identification.
D.National security is being threatened by “deepfake”.
【小题4】What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Ways to identify fake videos.
B.People’s different views on “deepfake”.
C.A new technology with a bright future.
D.A worrying new technology “deepfake”.

Growing Vegetables in Space

Have you ever dreamed of travelling in space? Well, you may not go, but you may be able to eat vegetables grown from seeds that have! China, the USA and Russia have all become interested in whether it is possible to eat food grown from seeds that have been in space. Indeed since 1987 China has sent 1,000 species of seeds into space to do experiments. These include green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce and wheat.

The most advanced work on growing vegetables in space has been undertaken on the International Space Station run by Russian and American astronauts. One of the most exciting moments was when soybean seeds were brought back to Earth and planted. These seeds were the first to come from a crop grown entirely in space.

The scientists chose to grow soybeans in space because they are an important source of protein in the human diet. Mark Nall, director of Space Product Development Programme for National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), said that “this experiment and others are paving the way for improving crops grown on Earth, as well as potentially feeding people living in space.” The problem is that producing a new strain of soybean is a slow procedure on Earth so the scientists hope that it can be speeded up in space. Perhaps the seeds may also develop some characteristics that will be useful for farmers-for example, produce more oil or protein.

However, the scientists are aware that there may be problems. “Conditions in outer space such as radiation and low gravity may cause big changes in the seeds,” said Jin Xing, a Chinese researcher. He knows that genetically modified food is still being debated and so some people will be very suspicious of these “space vegetables”. However Jin has a more positive view. He thinks that unlike genetically modified crops, no new genes are being introduced into space vegetables so they will be safe.

The Chinese government certainly thinks so because they have been cooperating with NASA to produce a new strain of virus-free potatoes. Their scientists hope that in space it may be possible to produce a new crop every 40-50 days instead of one crop a year. So watch out for these special potatoes on the supermarket shelves. Maybe some day you will find them on your dinner table!

Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.
One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock(家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.
Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear(修剪) sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The plete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.
