Since it’s made up of over 7,000 islands, the Philippines is not a train-heavy nation. That means coach buses are going to be your best choice for getting city-to-city. There is a small light rail system in the Manila metro area (called the Light Rail Transit System or “LRT” for short), but it has a bad name for being delayed most of the time.
If the phrase “coach bus” calls forth images of old Greyhounds, you’re off the mark. Because coaches in the Philippines are the primary means of intercity transit, many popular bus companies actually feature onboard attendants (think flight attendants, but, you know, on a bus) as well as entertainment centers, posh seats, and other comfortable accouterments (配备).
There’s no one central bus company in the Philippines, so central bus stations are uncommon. That means you need to know which company you want to take, what bus to get on, and where to catch it. Connect with a Filipino local for help when you’re planning your trip. They’ll help you figure out the who/what/where/when of bus transit and walk you through the entire process.
Besides coach buses, jeepneys are also very popular. They are old military jeeps left over from the US occupation of the Philippines which have since been converted into colorful, uniquely-Filipino private buses. They’re cheap, usually around 7 pesos or 0.25 per ride, they’re everywhere, and they’re probably the most popular form of mass transit in the Philippines.
More than anything though, jeepneys are colorful. The owners take lots of pride in their rides, and it’s common to see richly-painted jeepneys on most major roads. Where do you catch a jeepney and where do they go? Make it easy on yourself: have your local trip planner contain at least one jeepney ride into your travel plan—they’ll give you all the information you need.

Managing a popular tourist attraction can be kind of like throwing a party — everyone wants to come and have fun, but nobody wants to help clean up when it's over. But the Faroe Islands have come up with a creative way to take care of their home and welcome visitors at the same time.
An official notice on the islands' national tourism website reads "closed for maintenance (维护), open for voluntourism.”Following a successful plan this year, the country has made the decision to "close” its major tourism sights and attractions during the weekend of April 16-17, 2020. Hotels will be open, and flights will continue. That weekend, people all over the Faroe Islands will be working on environmental protection projects.
However, people who are just dying to visit the Faroe Islands during that weekend can sign on to help with the housekeeping. The islands are looking for 100 volunteers to come to the country to help with the caretaking efforts. There were thousands of applications for the 2019 plan, so would-be islanders better apply fast.
"For us, tourism is not all about numbers, " Director at Visit Faroe Islands told CNN Travel earlier this year." We welcome visitors to the islands each year, but we also have a responsibility to our community and to our beautiful environment, and our aim is to protect the islands, ensuring responsible growth." The first group of voluntourists included travelers from Mexico, Israel, Australia, China and the United States. The director said that because of the surprising popularity of the volunteering weekend in 2019, the Faroes will host the event yearly. According to the Faroes' tourism authority, visits to the country have increased by 10% over the past few years.

Starting in Darwin our small group stepped onboard a comfortable vehicle designed for the terrain (地形) in the region. We enjoyed a warm welcome onboard from our experienced Journey Director, Gordon, whose knowledge about the Northern Territory made the trip truly special. One of the things I enjoyed most was listening to Gordon sharing stories about our location and where we were travelling next. His in-depth information and stories about travelling in the Top End made us all feel like the locals!
One of the first highlights on the trip is Litchfield National Park with a stop at Wangi Falls for a chance to jump in and take a swim in the clear pool beneath the falls. This refreshing (使人精力充沛的) pool set the tone for the many Northern Territory highlights we would experience over the next few days. Everyone felt like a new person coming out of the pool.
The following day took us to Kakadu National Park. Seeing the beauty of Kakadu from both the ground and sky reflects the hugeness of this wilderness area. From the sky, you can see the crocodiles (鳄鱼) in the rivers. From the ground you see the remarkable plants and animals up close; the entire park is enveloped by natural beauty. This experience comes close to the amazing wildlife and habitats you’d find in Africa.
Then we travelled to Nourlangie, or Burrungkuy in the local indigenous (土著的) language, arriving armed with insider knowledge about what we were going to see. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed rock art site is known for its indigenous rock art, offering a fascinating record of thousands of years of indigenous life. Once we arrived, we took a short walk to the rock art sites with paintings dating back over 20,000 years. The stories behind these sites reflect how the indigenous people have survived and carried on their traditions for thousands of years.
On our last day, we stopped at Edith Falls, where some of the group who were training for mountain climbs hiked up to another swimming spot at the top of the falls. On arrival in Darwin, we said a tearful goodbye to our Journey Director Gordon who helped to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
