Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly good at fooling people. A series of photos showing former US president Donald Trump being aggressively arrested by police have caught people’s attention. They were fake but very convincing.

Created by the AI program Midjourney, the photos were highly realistic, from the characters’ movements to the surroundings. However, many details can give away the fact that they are made by AI. The Washington Post’s technology writer Shira Ovide shared her tips. The main idea is to spot the problems-anything that would look strange in a photo.

AI software has a history of generating human hands incorrectly. It sometimes can create hands with more than five fingers. This is because AI isn’t sure what a “hand” exactly is, according to Popular Science. The data AI uses to learn often show hands and fingers in various gestures, which can be very confusing for AI.

AI-generated images also usually contain details that are against reality. To spot this, focus on items like accessories. For example, people in an image may be missing earrings or one part of their sunglasses. If there’s text in an image, such as a newspaper or poster, it’s usually garbled (篡改), even though the text may look realistic from a distance.

Another thing AI is terrible at handling is the background. If there’s a crowd in the image, people’s faces in the background are usually blurry — or they don’t have faces at all!

The development of AI-generated art also raises alarm bells about how these fake images could be used to spread misinformation. “I think misinformation is going to hit an all-time high,” Jamie Cohen, a digital culture and AI expert in the US, told New York Post. Generating an AI artwork is to “create reality”, Cohen argued, adding that, being able to tell whether the work is real or not requires high media literacy (素养) skills. “The world may not be ready for how realistic the images have become,” Shane Kittelson, a US researcher, told The Washington Post.

Amazon will let customers at some Whole Foods stores pay with a simple wave of their hands.

The company announced it is bringing palm scanners (掌纹扫描仪) to one of its Whole Foods stores in Seattle, with plans to roll out the new payment system to eight stores in the Seattle area in the coming months. Customers will hold their hands above the scanner for a contact-free payment method.

The scanners are already available (可用的) at one of those Seattle stores — its Madison Broadway location. Amazon plans to increase availability further after this first test run. “We’re always looking for new ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers,” said Arun Rajan, chief technology officer at Whole Foods.

To make use of the new service, customers will give Whole Foods their bank card information to make a connection with their palm print. They can choose to use a different payment method, such as cash, check or other bank cards, in later visits.

Amazon has already tried the system, which it calls Amazon One, at some of its own stores in Seattle, including Amazon Go and Amazon Go Grocery, which have allowed customers to pick the things they want and then leave the store without checking out, as sensors (传感器) and cameras track their purchases.

That checkout-free technology has been criticized (批评) as a way to avoid the need for workers.

Whole Foods said this new palm scanner will not have any effect on employment in the stores where it is offered.

“Amazon One is an additional payment choice at checkout, and Whole Foods Market Team Members will continue to maintain all of their present responsibilities,” said the company’s statement.

I was appreciating my family photos on my computer, admiring my two beautiful babies, when I found a disturbing trend: my laptop was in almost all the pictures. There was my daughter, 8 months old, playing at my feet while I was typing away on the couch. There was me and my son, with the laptop at my side as I held him in my arms.
I’d heard about the Internet addiction before, but always assumed I was something limited to socially challenged guys who played too much World of Warcraft (a computer game). Now it seemed my Internet “habit” is slowly but surely crossing the line. Sometimes I find myself up at midnight, surfing the Web while my family are sleeping. I read news, keep up with friends and write my blog … just for something to do.
It turns out that I’m not the only mama who is addicted to the computer. These moms are contributing to a growing global addiction. There’s a movement among psychiatrists (doctors who specialize in mental diseases) to recognize the Internet addiction as an official mental disorder. And a recent Stanford University national survey found that 14 percent of Internet users find it hard to stay away from it for several days at a time; 9 percent try to hide their “unnecessary Internet use” from their loved ones; 8 percent admit they use the Web as a way to escape problems.
You’re likely not the kind of addict who doesn’t bathe and abuses drugs to help her stay “up” for more online time. You may have noticed, though, that going online has become a necessary part of your life, which, at least, means a load of clothes go unwashed.
It may also mean you’re missing much time with you baby – something you probably do care about.
【小题1】From Paragraph 1, we can conclude that _______.

A.Many women still can control their online time.

C.Going online has become a necessary part of women’s lives.
D.Many people don’t realize that they are addicted to the Internet.

A Beijing subway line linking with Daxing International Airport has now started a new recognition system, which allows passengers to enter and exit stations by just scanning the palm of a hand, according to a report in China Daily. The system is available at the ticket machines and gates at all stops along the line.

The pilot program was launched on Sunday on the Daxing Airport Express subway line to spare passengers the trouble of swiping a card or scanning a QR code to catch a train, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said.

Any people aged 14 and above can first register the print of either palm through a simple, automated process and provide relevant information to authorize the payment gateway of WeChat, a popular messaging app in China. The registration is a one-time process and doesn’t require renewal. Once the palm print is registered, a passenger can just place the palm above the scanning machine when entering or exiting a subway station. The ticket gate will open automatically if the palm scan matches the palm print registered. The fare is automatically deducted (扣除) after exit.

To protect the users’ information, the system uses data masking and encryption (加密) technologies and it combines the use of palm print and vein mapping, which are different for every individual. It can recognize the user’s palm print and veins without contact, which is healthier, faster and safer than the ordinary check-in methods.

Currently, it is very useful for the elderly and those who have physical limitations. They can take the subway without using smartphone apps. Passengers can take subway trains if they do not have cash or when they forget their subway cards.

The system can be gradually used in offices, schools, gyms and restaurants, as it requires no contact and is therefore more safe and efficient.
