When I was about five years old, I was living with my parents in New York. It was the 1980s and one day I sat in front of my favourite lunchbox. This one held my huge collection of crayons (蜡笔). Like most children, I was curious and I wanted to “discover” what was inside my crayons. So I broke them in two. I was rather disappointed to find nothing but more crayon inside of them. Growing up, I saw my television taken apart to see the parts inside. In fact, my childhood interest in the building blocks (构成要素) of things led me to pursue a career in engineering.

I realized that inside all of the human-made things in the world around us are fundamental building blocks. Without them our complex machinery wouldn’t exist.

It is this idea that inspired my book, one in which I have selected what I believe to be the seven core elements that form the basis of the modern world: the nail, the wheel, the spring, the magnet (磁铁), the lens, the pump (泵) and string. Together they have a vast range of innovations. They have created and changed our technology and our history, society, communication, transportation, arts and culture.

I-selected these seven objects during the first 2020 lockdown. Trapped at home, I let my mind wander freely while looking around at my possessions dismantling them to see what lay inside each of them. For example, the speaker on my phone through which I could hear the voices of my family and friends relied on a magnet. Even as I thought about larger and more complex objects-skyscrapers, tunnels, satellites and so on, I came back to the same seven basic innovations.

Look around yourself and ask questions about what you see: reignite (重新燃起) that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, this will inspire you to investigate the increasingly complicated world of engineering, and is something which will lead you to form a better understanding of the building blocks of our world.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve been frightened by the idea of disappointing people. 【小题1】 From preschool through my master degree years I was always the first in my class. But obviously, I’m not a genius. Sometimes, I brought home a nine out of ten grade and my parents would ask me where the other point had gone.

Of course, the explanation was simple: I’d made a mistake. But for a perfectionist, that’s a very dangerous thought, which can cause a chain of abusive self-talks. After all, that mistake was so stupid. 【小题2】

What hides behind my perfectionism is the illusion (幻觉) of control, the idea that if I work hard and do my best, I’ll be perfect and protected, 【小题3】 Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, except me; everything is a competition, and anything I can’t win is a dead loss.

【小题4】 It can even make you physically sick with headaches, stomachaches, muscle cramps and so. on. In some cases, it leads to self-harming behavior, such as eating disorders and addiction. The other dark side of perfectionism is that you become unable to truly appreciate your success — you only focus on what you could’ve done better.

Despite the problems, perfectionism has allowed me to complete a lot and become who I am today. “To see perfectionism as a uniquely negative thing is actually to deny a part of yourself,” said the perfectionism coach Yasmina Hajoui. 【小题5】 But that desire needs to be balanced and come from a healthy place.

A.Perfectionism is a survival mechanism.
B.There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do things well.
C.The problem is that perfectionism brings more than stress.
D.I should have studied more, worked harder and focused better.
E.In perfectionism, we tend to believe that only our achievements define us.
F.And if something isn’t perfect, that means it’s my fault and that I’m awful.
G.My solution to that anxiety was to achieve perfectionism-and mostly, it worked.
In our life of journey, we each have important roles to play. Some are conductors and some are singers. And the rest are heroes in the supporting cast(配角演员)and are necessary to complete the different tasks in life. The “stars” would be greatly darkened if the individual heroes don’t support their performances. The magical accents of the performance section might sound terrible and out of place, unless you could also hear the music they accompany. Even one member of an orchestra doing less than their best could stop the harmony of the musical piece.
So even though you may not receive the attention of the other performers, your contribution is valuable and a unique part of the success of the whole in the life you lead.
When you do your job well, you put your own unique energy into the task. Each of us has a different personality and a different talent, just suited for the different roles we support. We can look around us at any moment and identify with the people we work with. Doing your job well displays your ability and gratitude, while learning the lessons from others can move us towards our goals.
When you are fully present in the job you do, you bring the fullness of your mind, body, and spirit to the moment. Your contribution is strengthened by your talents and abilities, and they can attract the right people and circumstances to your experience. You are playing your role to your very best. You are giving your best to be the world and making it a better place for all of us to live in. remember, each of us is expected to be the best.

Dear Mom,

The big question which shocked parents often ask their child after a confrontational(冲突) moment is, "Where did you get this attitude from?" I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.

Mom, I know it's hard dealing with the teenage anxiety and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I've made it this far, that I'm healthy and happy.

When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn't be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother's daughter.

"Your mom is Melissa," they'd say, a warm smile on their faces. "Is that Tight?” I would nod. I think parents feel much hurt when their child talks back or defies them, I was shocked at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.

No one says, ”I know you're Melissa's daughter because of your eyes and nose". It's the character traits(特点)that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude-these are the things I am grateful I have received from you. There's nothing wrong with having attitude.

Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it's what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation-where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are.

Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.

When I'm asked why I am the way I am, why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions and why I think and speak about things openly and without fear. I'll tell them it's because of you.

I'll complain to you about the arguments between us that leave me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed. But I'll tell them about you.

Love,

Malahni
