Rather than continue living a comfortable urban life, this British family has sold their London home in favor of launching the world’s smallest nature reserve to save a nation’s coral reef system. Karolina and Barry Seath—along with their two young daughters—are preparing to move to an island in the Seychelles (非洲塞舌尔群岛)measuring just 1,300 feet long by 980 feet wide (400 by 300 meters).

They’ve launched a charity and teamed up with(与……合作)local biologists in an effort to bring the coral reefs back to life in the smallest African country, which have been almost wiped out by rising sea temperatures. Their land-based coral farm will be only the second of its kind in the world, the other being on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, to specialize in regrowing coral to restore the reefs.

47-year-old Barry, who is a former policeman, said, “We are just a normal husband, wife and two kids, living the sort of life that most others do, but we felt the need to make a positive change for ourselves, our children, and the world we had largely taken for granted.”

Over the course of several vacations to the Seychelles, the Seaths witnessed the gradual deterioration(恶化)of the reefs. “Every time we visited, we noticed the coral was getting worse and worse,” said Barry. “All the tourists say the same thing. They love the beaches but are really disappointed with the coral.”

Barry felt it was time to make a change and show his daughters an alternative way of eco-friendly living. He then teamed up with experts at the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles in order to develop the facility. Once it is complete, it will be the first large-scale, land-based coral farm in the Indian Ocean. The eco-warriors hope to use the facility to grow around 10,000 corals per year. Barry said, “Our long-term goal is to show everyone that—with just a relatively small investment—you can have a big positive influence on the marine environment.”

In the last few years, biotechnology has been changing the way we think about fashion by turning organic waste into sustainable fibers. Revolutionary textiles (纺织品) made from pineapples, oranges, grapes, and even mushrooms are here to stay. And now, an amazing invention joins the sustainable trend by turning spoiled milk into biodegradable (可生物分解的) T-shirt.

Mi Terro, an exciting and innovative startup based in Los Angeles, was founded by CEO Robert Luo. After visiting his uncle’s dairy farm in 2020, and noticing the huge amounts of milk being dumped, Luo realized something must be done. According to Mi Terro, 40 percent of food including 128 million tons of milk is wasted annually. This generated around 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases.

Luo soon came up with a way to turn food waste into clothes, turning the spoiled milk into biodegradable fibers to form an eco-friendly textile.

Not only is Luo’s solution extremely creative, it also adds benefit to the clothing he manufactures. According to Interesting Engineering, the process uses 60 percent less water than is used when making organic cotton shirts and the textile feels three times softer than cotton. Plus, the clothing is antibacterial, anti-wrinkle, and temperature regulating. These clothes are also healthy to wear; each T-shirt has 18 amino acids (氨基酸) that benefit the skin. But there’s even more! The company has committed to planning 1S trees for every purchase.

Mi Terro launched its milk-made T-shirts-online in 2021, and they now sold in over 40 countries around the world. Its groundbreaking process can also be used to create a sustainable substitute for plastic. Their ultimate goal would be to replace petroleum-based materials with protein-based materials made from food waste. This, in itself, has countless applications for the fashion, health care, and packaging industries.

Innovative and inspiring solution are proving to be the answer to growing waste and sustainability challenges the globe faces these days. Eco-conscious businesses like Mi Terro are creating a circular economy and are having a huge positive impact on the environment. Their vision for sustainable solutions may soon impact the entire world.

Global animal populations are declining, and we’ve got limited time to try to fix it. That’s the outcome of a new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which analyzed years of data on wildlife populations across the world and found a downward trend in the Earth’s biodiversity.

According to the Living Planet Index, animal populations across the world decreased by 69% between 1970 and 2018. Not all animal populations decreased, though, and some parts of the world saw more dramatic changes than others. But experts say the loss of biodiversity is a worrying sign of what’s to come for the natural world. “The message is clear and the lights are flashing red,” said WWF International Director General Marco Lambertini.

According to the report’s authors, biodiversity loss mainly results from land-use changes driven by human activities, such as infrastructure (基础设施) development, energy production and deforestation. But the report suggests that climate change — which is already causing wide-ranging effects on plant and animal species globally — could become the leading cause of biodiversity loss if rising temperatures can’t be limited to 1.5℃.

Lambertini said the crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change is already responsible for plenty of problems for humans, including less access to food and water and a rise in the spread of diseases. He said world leaders should take major steps to deal with environmental damage. They are locked in old-world thinking, with no sign of the brave action needed to achieve a nature-positive future.

WWF chief scientist Rebecca Shaw told a radio station that humans have the opportunity to change how they do things to benefit nature. “We don’t have to continue the patterns of development we have now. And we have an opportunity to change the way we produce, what we cat and how we consume food and what we waste when we consume our food,” Shaw said. “Little things that we can do every day can change the direction of animal population declines.”

【小题1】What does the new report indicate about the animal populations?

B.The degree of the decrease is relatively low.
C.All species on Earth have witnessed a drop in population.
D.Global animal populations are declining at an alarming speed.

C.How to maintain sustainable diets.D.How to stop animal population decline.
