“There may be about 115 species of the snailfish there,” Andrew said, “this is【小题8】 I came to Antarctica, seeing things like this. It’s just beyond 【小题9】(word). We now have the whole families of fish that are found nowhere else in the world except in the Southern Ocean. These are【小题10】(attract) animals.”

China is in mourning after its most famous and oldest captive (圈养的) panda Basi died 【小题1】(age) thirty-seven. Basi was born in the wild in 1980. At the age of four, she fell into an icy river and was 【小题2】(fortune) rescued by some local villagers 【小题3】(live) in the county of Baoxing in southwest China's Sichuan Province. The locals handed her over to the Strait Panda Research and Exchange Centre in Fuzhou, where she lived the rest of her life. Basi came to fame shortly【小题4】she was chosen as the model for Pan Pan, the mascot of the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing.

Basi never bred (繁殖) but overcame several severe【小题5】(ill) to live for more than【小题6】(two) the 15-year life expectancy of wild pandas. Basi【小题7】(confirm) to be the world’s oldest captive panda by Guinness World Records in August. Captive pandas tend to live【小题8】(long) due to better nutrition and living conditions. Word has come【小题9】Basi’s body will be put in Basi Museum, which is【小题10】construction at present for people to remember her forever and share the spirit of the harmonious development between humans and nature.

On the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, there is a long bar of sand【小题1】(call)Farewell Spit. The area is famous, but for a【小题2】(desire)reason. It's a hotspot of whale stranding(搁浅).Whales strand【小题3】(they)on beaches. Are these coastlines the whales’ graveyards?

In February, 2015, 200 pilot whales became stuck on the shore. It was the biggest stranding in the area in over a decade, according to local conversation team.【小题4】(rescue)spent hours trying to refloat them, but 100 died. Without the support of water, the weight of their bodies【小题5】(break)their muscles.

The【小题6】(remain)whales were watered and kept as comfortable as possible by volunteers equipped with buckets and spades. Sixty were eventually refloated, but soon stranded again. Members of the Public helped to refloat them【小题7】second time and now the whales【小题8】(believe)to be back at sea.

Beaches like Farewell Spit are perhaps the most places【小题9】whales can die. To all purposes, it seems as if the whales have killed themselves by swimming too close【小题10】the shore. So are beaches places in which whales go to die—or are there other graveyards that we don't know about? It's a mystery that has been around since ancient times.
