The sun shone high in the bright, blue sky. All the students were talking in the playground in excitement. They had been told that the next day they would have a test on good manners(礼貌).

The children had thought that hygiene(卫生)was an important part of the test. One child added that they should also remember to say “please” and “thank you.” The next day all the children appeared in their best clothes. The playground was very bright that day; a contrast (对比)that was provided with the usual black and white uniform of the school.

All the children made a line and began to go inside the building. As they went, an old washerwoman(洗衣女工)who worked at the school appeared. She had white hair and carried an extremely heavy bag of clothes on her back. As the students passed, she asked for help. Some of them did not reply at all and some of them replied, “Sorry but we have a very important test and we cannot be late.”

None helped until the washerwoman asked the last student going inside, Maria. Maria replied, “Of course, I’ll help you.”

Maria took the burden(重担)off the old washerwoman＇s back and put it onto her shoulders. She then followed the old lady to her workplace.

The path was not a smooth one. Maria accidentally(不小心) fell down and her dress became dirty. Maria was sure she would fail her test now, for she was already late and now she was not presentably(体面的)dressed either，but she put on a brave face and continued walking.

After a while, Maria and the washerwoman came to the workplace. The old lady opened the door and Maria followed her inside. Maria was shocked to find her whole class inside the room.

“What happened?” she asked in surprise.

“However, only Maria passed the test,” the teacher said.

My mother knew how much I loved singing. She always felt sorry that she couldn’t afford to pay for music classes for me.

Life was not easy for us during that period. I was living with my mother after she separated from my dad, which happened the year before when I was in third grade. Sometimes the nights were tedious (单调乏味的) and tiresome as we did not have a television and the batteries in our old radio would often run out. However, I enjoyed the 20 songs that my mother and I sang together. As she hummed the tune and I sang along, I dreamed of a world where performing on stage would be the pillar (支柱) of my life. The turning point of my childhood came after the end of fourth grade. Our neighbor moved away and left his old piano to us.

When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the representative of our class.

However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was in Grade Three, a student named Vannilyn came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my class and I heard that Vannilyn was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought, I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.

There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson. When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked beautiful or not. What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my teachers began to criticise me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Vannilyn in front of me!

I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Vannilyn. I was discouraged and no longer followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final examination result, and I still ranked No. 1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.

I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study.

Three days later, the result of the English Spelling competition was announced.
