It was Monday. I was standing in the doorway of my room at The Seeing Eye (a guide dog school), anxiously waiting to hear my instructor call my name. All sorts of questions ran through my mind, and on the top was the fear that I was making an awful mistake — To adopt (领养) a guide dog when I had been afraid of dogs all my life? Crazy!

I wanted to bite my nails. I changed from one foot to the other and sighed frequently. Finally, shocking me out of my own thoughts, I heard my instructor say, “Shannon!”

“Shannon,” she said, “This is George.”

Two huge paws touched my knees.

“Down, George,” my instructor said, and the dog obeyed immediately.

We were taken back to my room where the door was closed, being left alone. I petted him. He put up his paw to shake my hand, and he sat so nicely, as if to say, “I’m a good boy, I promise.”

However, several minutes later, George got bored with me and went to the door, crying out for the lady who had trained him. I was at a complete loss as to what to do next.

Sometime later, my instructor took George and me on a walk outside. I took the handle of George’s harness (项圈) and stumbled (跌跌撞撞走) around that path instead of walking, and I kept stepping on poor George’s feet, but he never stopped and neither did I. Still, I was worried. If this stumbling around was what I could expect, maybe this guide dog wasn’t for me.

In the school, we were taught to walk with our dogs. We were also taught to feed, water and care for our dogs without any sighted help. We had to master all things before we left the school. Sometimes, it was easy, and sometimes it was not.

I struggled hard in order to pass the last day exam, where I would walk along an unfamiliar street with George. If we arrived at the destination safely, I could take George home.

One day, Billy was walking in the park when he suddenly came across a homeless dog. He initially was frightened of the dog, who glared and barked at him from the bushes.

“Hey there... You hungry?” Billy asked softly, trying to calm the dog down as he reached into his pocket to pull out a sandwich. He took one half and held it out to the dog. The dog calmed down, stepped forward and ate it next to Billy. A little calmer, Billy started to pat the dog as he ate the other half.

The dog began to lick (舔) his hand when both pieces were finished. “I’m sorry. That was the only sandwich I took with me,” Billy laughed cheerfully, fully lowering his guard. As he got up, the dog began running and jumping happily around Billy, hoping to play with him. “Sorry, buddy. I have to go home,” Billy said. The dog cautiously followed Billy. Later that evening, Billy saw the dog sitting outside his yard through the window. He immediately ran out to her. “Buddy, what are you doing here?” Billy asked as he playfully patted her. The dog wagged her tail, barking in delight.

“Alright. Let me try and see if my mom won’t mind taking you in,” Billy said.

Billy ran back and told his mom all about the dog. “Are you crazy, Billy? We barely have enough to sustain ourselves. I’m sorry, but it’s a no!” Mom declined him.

Billy accepted his mom’s words and went outside to say his goodbyes. However, when he got outside, he noticed the heavy storm was coming and felt for his new friend.

He had hoped that the dog would seek shelter somewhere, but she just sat there. He fig-ured she was still waiting for him, so he went out into the rain to try to lead his friend to shelter.

“Come on, girl! Go!” Billy said, trying to lead the dog to the nearby sheltered car park. But she wouldn’t move an inch. She stuck right by his side. The rain began to pour down harder.

Erika and the Necklace

Erika and her little sister Beth sneaked into their mommy’s room. “I’m just going to try on some jewelry,” said Erika. She took a necklace and tried to put it on her neck. “Oh, no,” said Beth. “Mommy doesn’t like us playing with her stuff.” “Okay, you be the lookout,” instructed Erika. “Stand by the door and let me know if Mommy comes up the stairs.”

Before Beth got to the door, Bouncer, the family’s Bernedoodle dog, bounded into the room and almost knocked Erika down. The necklace went flying. It had barely hit the floor when Bouncer bit it and raced off.

“Bouncer! Bouncer!” yelled Erika. “Beth, help me get the necklace back.” The girls were hot on Bouncer’s tail. “Stop!” they yelled. Bouncer dashed down the stairs and into the living room. He stopped just long enough for the girls to get close to him. Then of he went. “Stop!” yelled Erika. “Beth, you go the other way. We’ll corner him in the dining room.”

Erika met Beth in the dining room. Sure enough, Bouncer was there waiting for them. He was down low on his front legs with his tail in the air, ready to play. “Grab him!” screamed Erika.

Just as Beth was about to grab him, Bouncer took off. He whizzed (嗖地移动) by Beth and Erika. “Stop, you troublemaker!” yelled Erika as she raced after him. The girls were getting close again, but Bouncer zoomed down the basement stairs. The girls raced after him. “I don’t see him,” said Beth. Erika scratched her head. “He’s got to be down here. He’s hiding.”

Just then Mom called to the girls. “Erika, what’s all the noise? What’s wrong? I heard you from the yard.” “Uh, oh,” whispered Erika. “Uh.. nothing’s wrong,” she shouted.

Beth dashed up the stairs. Erika heard her telling Mom everything. “That blabber mouth (多嘴的人),” said Erika under her breath.

Standing at the lake’s edge, I threw my line onto the smooth-as-glass water of Police Outpost Lake, lost in my own thoughts.

I’d learned to fish from my dad. He had taught me to fish alone, in silence. He had been a fish and wildlife officer with great passion for his job, especially the part where he protected nature from humans. He had showed me everything I knew about fishing. Then, he passed away.

My brother Isaiah shouted, “where should I stand?”

“Be quiet or else we won’t catch any fish,” I whispered.

Isaiah frowned, sighing, but it was “message received. ”

Pulling back on my fish pole, looking into the light of the sun, I caught sight of a few great northern loons(潜鸟)gathered together not far from the shoreline. What were they doing there? Loons usually travel alone, but here were five of them in a group. Maybe it was a family? One loon, crying in sorrow, swam away from the group, toward me.

“Isaiah! Come here! Take a look at that loon. It’s swimming toward us, getting closer and closer. ”

“It’s only a decoy(诱饵),”said Isaiah. “Look at that beak(喙)! It could easily stick us to death with that thing! It could tear our faces! Pull out our eyes! ”

Just then, the loon let out crazy laughing sound.

“It’s not a decoy! It’s trying to get our attention. ” I said.

The loon stopped in the shallow water near shore, not ten feet away from us. It was so close that we could see its small red eyes.

Oddly, the bird’s wings were held against its spotted black-and-white body. Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw a thin wire surrounding its neck tightly. It was asking us to help!
