China is known as the Kingdom of Bamboo because it is the country with the most bamboo in the world. More than 400 species of bamboo, one third of all known species in the world, grow in China. The areas【小题1】 produce the most bamboo are south of Yangtze River.

Bamboo was 【小题2】 ( close) connected with the daily lives of people in ancient China. In the Han Dynasty, bamboo 【小题6】 ( use) for papermaking because it produced high-quality paper and was 【小题7】 ( expensive): three tons of bamboo could yield one ton of paper pulp(纸浆). And bamboo is still an important raw material for papermaking today. Some 1,600 years ago, people wrote with brushes on xuan paper 【小题8】 ( make) from young bamboo, and xuan paper is still popular for Chinese calligraphy and paintings.

Tall and 【小题9】 ( leaf), bamboo is an ideal plant for household courtyards and parks. It tolerates the heat of summer and the cold of winter, and it regenerates after 【小题10】 ( cut).

Three cows swept away by Hurricane Dorian have been found miles from home in a national park, a spokesman said. Dorian brought strong winds, damaging tornadoes (龙卷风) and heavy rain 【小题1】 North Carolina in September when it   【小题2】 (make) landfall on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

During 【小题3】 storm, wild horses and cows 【小题4】 (carry) away by floodwaters from Cedar Island. Many horses died in the flood. The cows were missing until they were discovered around four miles away at Cape Lookout National Seashore park, according to B. G Horvat, the park’s spokesman.

The cows were not wild. Horvat said they had caretakers in Cedar Island 【小题5】 looked after them, and the park is trying to get in touch with 【小题6】 (they) owner. “They likely got swept away from the same body of water as those wild horses,” Horvat said “These cows were just really 【小题7】 (luck) because they went through the same thing and they could have   【小题8】 (easy) drowned (淹死). ”

One cow was found shortly after Dorian hit, while the other two were found about two weeks later by   【小题9】 (visitor). Horvat said the cows were eating in the wild on the Core Banks and they were able 【小题10】 (survive) from the sea grass or other vegetation. Head they might be drinking on the south side of the island, which has fresh water.

At the Shishou Milu National Nature Reserve in Hubei Province, about 2,000 creatures wander freely. Their numbers include 460 deer born this year, showing that the species, 【小题1】 was once endangered in China in the early 20th century, has staged a remarkable 【小题2】 (recover).

Often 【小题3】 (refer) to as sìbuxiang, a milu deer seems to consist of parts of various creatures. It has antlers (鹿角) like other deer, but seems to have the head of a horse, the feet of cattle and the tail of a donkey (驴).

【小题4】 one of the animal’s three major protected areas in China, the Shishou reserve was established in 1991. Close to the Yangtze River, the area has a complete wetland ecosystem,an ideal habitat for the deer. Its conservation story provides 【小题5】 example for other endangered animals under a threat of extinction.
