A fashion show that features elderly people as models is a rarity. One with elderly Black African models is even rarer. Perhaps that’s why Nigerian visual artist Malik Afegbua got so much attention from around the world when he posted images titled “The Elders Series” on social media last month showing seniors on a fashion runway, dressed in stylish and colorful clothes.

“The inspiration behind this series was my mum,” explained Afegbua, 38. “She had a stroke(中风), and I am very close to her. I just needed an outlet to find a way to express myself and not think about her on a life-support machine. I wanted to think about her in a happy place.”

But what’s truly remarkable about the images is that the ground-breaking fashion show never actually took place. While the images look like photographs of a genuine vent, they were entirely generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

“The Eiders Series” is an extension of other projects that Afegbua has created through AI. He uses the AI Platform Midjourney, which generates images in response to text prompts (提示). Afegbua says he experiments with different phases, refining his search terms until he gets an image he likes, and then edits it in Photoshop-repeating the process until he achieves the effect he’s looking for.

Afegbua believes AI can be a powerful tool for the arts-film and television in particular. “It’s here to say...it’s going to advance and it’s going to get better,” he said. But he says the role of a human creator is still key. “AI is not All. It can’t think by itself. There is always s human being behind it-to put things in motion,” he added.

One day when I was driving on the freeway, I noticed all the way there were large dividing walls, which had been built between it and the road running parallel to it, for noise reduction (减少) and a sense of separation. The purpose was to create a sense of privacy (隐私) for people on the other side.
This got me thinking: How often do we put up mental barriers that keep us distant from others? Lifting the artificial barriers that keep us apart can offer opportunities to express our goodwill and create better relationships. If we can do like this, maybe our life will be a little different.
There is a little post office in a nearby town, and since it is closer to me than the post office in my own town, I go there. One day, with many people jammed into the little building, a man came hurrying in to mail a letter, and the girl at the counter saw he had too little postage on it. She told him he needed 2 more cents. Obviously he was a little at a loss. He had hurried over from his office, and didn’t have any money on him or time to stand in line. He was going to run back to get the needed money and wait in line again, but he hurried to get the letter mailed in the first place.
As we were watching him, one woman volunteered a two-cent stamp, and the whole line became very quiet. It was a beautiful moment. The man hesitated for a little while and asked her if she was sure, and she assured him she was fine with giving him the stamp. He offered to go back to his office to get the two cents, and she told him not to bother.
It was a small thing, but it meant something to both of the people involved, and to the rest of us. We aren’t a yard that needs defining or a freeway that needs barriers. We are human beings who can contribute to each other’s wellbeing by taking time to pay attention and interact. After all, we are all parts of a whole living in society.

Precious family moments

When our three children were small, and I’d clean up after baths for the thousandth time, pick wet towels off the floor, squeeze water out of yellow rubber ducks and call the kids to come back and brush their teeth, I often thought of Someday.

Someday I’d do something important.

When I read bedtime stories, the same stories I’d read so many times that I knew them from memory, my brain froze from the repetition, and my mind wandered to Someday.

Someday life wouldn’t be so routine.

When I stared at a pound of frozen ground beef, considering my two standard options of spaghetti or sloppy joes, trying to remember when we last had what, I thought of Someday.

Someday I’d be creative.

Then one day I had an epiphany. I wasn’t one who was going to leave a mark on the world or build an empire. But I was going to leave a mark on this family, and I already had an empire. It was right under my nose, tucked in (盖好被子的) bed by 8 o'clock.

The Someday I often dreamed about was being shaped by all the todays and yesterdays. Someday was in the making now.

I was doing something important. Caring for children, creating family and trying to make a home that is a sanctuary (庇护所) from a rough world are some of the most important things a person can do.

Creativity? We didn’t always have ground beef. Sometimes we had chicken or fish. It wasn’t the food that mattered; it was being together around the table, the conversation, the laughing, the connecting.

As for routine, no routine stays the same. But even as the routine changes, basics are taught the fact that choices matter because choices become habits, and habits become a way of being, and that is how character takes root.

The things that matter most — knowing you’re loved and knowing how to love others, being generous, extending charity, working hard and recovering after failures and setbacks are learned little by little, one day at a time.

Someday is closer than you think.

Walking home from work with a family friend, I found myself in a discussion about her daughter's going to college.

It started with the mother telling me that she had no money to help her daughter go through college, which led the mother to push community college fiercely. She then started to say how she had been pushing “high-paying” fields on her daughter—doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc. When I asked her if that was what her daughter had interest in, she said no. I asked her what the point was to push her daughter into something that she didn't like, and she responded with, “I just want her to make a good fortune.”

After hearing her words, I would like to state that money is not everything. A high-paying job means nothing if you are miserable. I used to do a high-paid job, but it was very tiring and I had no time of my own. I didn't like it at all. Though the pay was good, I was not happy.

So I'd like to tell parents, please do not force your children into a major or a career just because you think they are going to make a lot of money. They would feel terrible for taking that major or job just to comfort you. The worst part is the feeling of guilty when they decide to change that major to something they actually want or when they quit that job.

Being a member of a generation who are willing to give absolutely everything to our kids, we know we just hope our children could live happy lives. Please do not force a career path on our children just because we think it is good for them. Give our children advice, but don't force them.

【小题2】The mother chose the fields for her daughter mainly because ________.

【小题3】Why did the writer mention her story in Paragraph 3?
A.To prove that high-paying jobs mean nothing.
B.To show that not all high-paying jobs are satisfying.
C.To prove that high-paying jobs make people miserable.
D.To show that low-paying jobs are better than high-paying jobs.
【小题4】From the text, we can infer that the writer would most probably advise parents to ________.
A.choose the best major or career for their children.
B.avoid giving their children advice on their major or career.
C.let their children make the final decision on their major or career.
D.give everything to their kids to make sure they'll have a good future.
