Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of the person based on the color of the person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dresses. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviour.

Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their emotional states. Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face and eyes---be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness---so we can express them without ever saying a word. For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.

Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.

Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display their specific nonverbal behaviour is greatly affected by cultures and contexts. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behaviour is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for men to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping one’s fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.

Speaking two languages can actually help offset(抵消) some effects of aging on the brain, a new study has found.

Researchers tested how long it took participants to switch from one cognitive(认知的) task to another, something that’s known to take longer for older adults, said lead researcher, Brian Gold, a neuroscientist at the University of Kentucky.

Gold’s team compared task-switching speeds for younger and older adults, knowing they would find slower speeds in the older population because of previous studies. However, they found that older adults who spoke two languages were able to switch mental activities faster than those didn’t . The study only looked at life-long bilinguals, defined in study as people who had spoken a second language daily since they were at least 10 years old.

Gold and his team asked 30 people, either bilingual or monolingual(只懂一种语言的人) , to have a series of tests. They found that bilingual people were not only able to switch tasks faster, they had different brain activity than their monolingual peers.

Kristina called bilingualism "a beautiful natural experiment”, because people grow up speaking two languages, and studies have shown that they get certain cognitive benefits from switching between languages and determining which to respond with based on what's going on around them.

Gold said he grew up in Montreal, where he spoke French at school and English at home, prompting relatives to question whether his French language immersion would somehow hinder his ability to learn English.

“Until very recently, learning a second language in childhood was thought of as dangerous,” he said. “Actually, it’s beneficial.”

How often have you heard decision-makers say, “Just give me the facts.” The assumption? The “facts” alone—delivered without emotion—convey the whole story. But experiments by psychologists have long suggested otherwise.

The data show that emotion plays an essential role in all communication. That’s because people first seek out and prioritize the emotional meaning hidden in the language. They process the emotional content in about 200 milliseconds. The rest of the meaning gets processed in 400-plus milliseconds. When we comprehend, we combine the “hot” component of processing (emotion and feeling) with the “cold” (facts and logic). That’s how we come up with the full meaning. What’s more, hot processing often dominates. And it gains the upper hand well after the cold processing. It doesn’t matter if people are reading or listening. Nor does it matter where they live on the planet or how they grew up.

This means that, when choosing your words, you best consider their emotional associations. Choose the language in which the emotional component agrees with or amplifies your intended meaning. Pioneering psychologist Amos Tversky and a team did a classic experiment that shows the impact of getting the feeling wrong: They gave Harvard Medical School physicians statistics on outcomes for lung cancer treatments. The data came from two sets of patients, some who had surgery, and some who had radiation. The doctors were to decide which treatment was preferred.

Roughly half the doctors got data as “probability of living” after treatment. The rest got the same data as the “probability of dying.” The result? The doctors’ answers depended not on the data alone. Their judgment is also based on whether the wording indicated a happy or sad emotion. The most interesting finding: “The attractiveness of surgery, compared with radiation, was much greater when the problem was described in terms of the probability of living rather than in terms of the probability of dying.”
