With its Victorian charm and windswept beauty, Block Island appeals to both outdoorsy travelers who want to hike, bike, boat and explore and to those who simply want to abandon reality back on the mainland.

See Mohegan Bluffs

As dramatic as any scenery in New England, the Mohegan Bluffs are 150-foot clay cliffs on the south side of Block Island. Unforgettable Atlantic Ocean views await those who descend a wooden staircase more than 140 steps to the sliver of sand below. The only protection you’ll need when you go to this spot is sunscreen.

Climb to the Top of Southeast Light

Block Island’s Southeast Light seemed doomed to fall into the sea. Erosion threatened this 1874 brick beacon until it was safely moved inland in 1993. The lighthouse’s small museum is open free to the public between Memorial Day weekend and the second Monday in October, and for a fee, you can often venture to the top of the tower on a tour: the 360-degree island views are worth it.

Meet Exotic Animals

At Abrams’ Animal Farm, you can meet a variety of animals from abroad. This free mini zoo is popular with families. Be sure to wander over to nearby North Light Fibers, where friendly alpacas(羊驼)are also eager to meet you.

Paddle the Great Salt Pond

To fully appreciate Block Island’s ecological wonders, you’ll want to get out on the water. Pond and Beyond Kayak offers two-and-a-half-hour small group ecotours of the Great Salt Pond that are perfect for even inexperienced paddlers. You’ll be able to ask questions and hear local insights, in addition to spying on wildlife and oyster farms.

Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the 2000 Olympic games put it on the map as one of the most lively and modern cities in the world. Any trip to Sydney is an adventure and with some of the world’s beautiful beaches, this city has so much to offer. Sydney is so large an area that choosing a hotel is something you need to do very carefully. Public transport is good, but it can be slow and being close to where you want to be is probably the most important factor.

The first and most obvious choice is hotels around Circular Quay. Circular Quay is the heart of the city and one of the major interchanges where trains, buses and ferries meet. It’s also where Sydney’s two most famous landmarks are located — the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. This area is active and offers some of the best views you will ever get from a hotel room.

The farther hotels in the city are much more suited to business travelers and they are usually less expensive. Daring Harbor is a great choice as it mixes a great view with being right in the centre of the city. Darling Harbor has hundreds of pubs, clubs and restaurants along the water’s edge.

If you don’t feel like dealing with the hustle and bustle of the city and are looking for something a bit quieter, why not head out to the Northern Beaches? It’s only a short ferry ride over to Manly where you can find two major hotels on the beach with a number of smaller boutiques (时装店,精品店).

【小题1】What made Sydney famous as one of the most lively and modern cities in the world?
A.Its traditional culture.B.its beaches and hotels.
C.The traffic system.D.The 2000 Olympics.
【小题2】If you want to live in a quiet hotel and buy some fashionable clothes or expensive gifts, you should choose one in __________ .
A.Circular QuayB.Darling Harbor
C.ManlyD.Sydney Harbor Bridge
【小题3】The underlined part “hustle and bustle” in the last paragraph may refer to _________.
A.hot climateB.serious pollution
C.busy noisy activitiesD.slow-moving traffic
