A skywell, or “tian jing” in Chinese, dating back to the Ming dynasty, is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China. It 【小题1】(design) to allow in light, improve ventilation (通风), and harvest rainwater. Less 【小题2】(expose) to the outdoor environment, a skywell is smaller and distinct from a northern courtyard.

Despite the fact 【小题3】 a skywell’s size and design vary from region to region, it is almost always rectangular (长方形) and located in the core of a house. It is either enclosed by rooms on four sides 【小题4】 three sides plus a wall. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor space through the opening. Because outdoor air is often cooler, the incoming wind travels down the walls to the lower stories 【小题5】 creates airflow by replacing 【小题6】(warm) indoor air, which rises and leaves through the opening.

Due to the 【小题7】(revive) of traditional Chinese architecture, skywell buildings have been making a comeback. Architects are now looking towards the 【小题8】(principle) behind skywells while designing new buildings 【小题9】(save) energy. One example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Center in the eastern Chinese city of Jinan. A giant skywell is in the middle of the 18-storey glass-walled tower block, 【小题10】(stretch) from the fifth to the top floor.

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in 【小题1】 you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of 【小题2】 you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of a diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage 【小题3】 (overeat), for people are often less self-conscious (难为情) when they’re in 【小题4】 (poor) lit places and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with 【小题5】 (bright).

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room 【小题6】 (consume) 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, 【小题7】 cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time 【小题8】 (repaint), go blue.

Don’t forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those 【小题9】 rush through their meals. Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller 【小题10】, total intake jumps by 14 percent.
