I had always dreamed of living and working in New York, which promised endless opportunities. But as soon as I arrived, I realized that my journey was going to be filled with countless setbacks and challenges.

My first major failure came when I landed my dream job at a famous company. However, after just a few months, I was let go due to budget cuts. I was shocked and felt like all of my hard work had been for nothing.

Determined to bounce back, I applied for a new job at another company. This time, things seemed to be going better. I was making progress and gaining valuable experience, but then I was suddenly laid off again due to company restructuring.

Feeling defeated and hopeless, I decided to take a break from the job search and focus on self-improvement. I enrolled in courses and attended workshops to learn new skills and expand my knowledge. But even with all of this effort, I still couldn’t find the right job.

One day, while searching online job listings, I found an opportunity that seemed too good to be true. It was a remote position that offered a competitive salary and flexible hours. Without hesitation, I applied and was thrilled when I received an offer letter.

However, as soon as I started working remotely, I realized that it wasn’t the same as being in an office with colleagues (同事) around me. I struggled to communicate effectively and found it difficult to stay motivated without the support of my team.

Despite these challenges, I refused to give up. I reached out to my colleagues and tried to build relationships with them through virtual meetings and social media. With their help and encouragement, I was able to adapt to the new environment and excel in my role. Looking back on my journey, I realized that success is not about avoiding failure, but rather about learning from it and persevering through the tough times. I encouraged others who may be facing similar challenges in their own careers to never give up on their dreams and to keep pushing forward even when things get tough.

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money.

When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “Only a miracle (something couldn’t happen) can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully.

She hurried to a drugstore (药店) with the money in her hand.

“And what do you want?” asked the salesman. “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “Pardon?” said the salesman.

“My brother Andrew has something bad growing in-side his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.

“Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He’s really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can’t pay for it, so I have brought all my money.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man. “$1.11, but I can try and get some more,” she answered.

“Well, what luck,” smiled the man. “$1.11, the price of a miracle for little brothers.”

He took up the girl’s hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again.

Because, like most of you, I began college in my teens, but after a year, I was offered my dream job at Universal Studios, so I dropped out.
Well, I left college because I knew exactly what I wanted to do and some of you know, too — but some of you don’t. Or maybe you thought you knew but are now questioning that choice. Maybe you’re sitting there trying to find out how to tell your parents that you want to be a doctor and not a writer.
I told my parents if my movie career didn’t go well, I’d re-enroll(重新报名上学). It went all right. But finally, I returned for one big reason.
Most people go to college for an education, and some go for their parents, but I went for my kids. I’m the father of seven, and I kept insisting on the importance of going to college, but I hadn’t walked the walk. So, in my fifties, I re-enrolled at Cal State-Long Beach, and I earned my degree.
Well, what you choose to do next is what we call in the movies the ‘character-defining(角色定义) moment’.
Life is one strong, long string of character-defining moments. And I was lucky that at 18 I knew what I exactly wanted to do. But I didn’t know who I was. How could I? And how could any of us? Because for the first 25 years of our lives, we are trained to listen to voices that are not our own. Parents and professors fill our heads with wisdom and information, and then employers and tutors take their place and explain how this world really works.
And I want to be clear that your intuition(直觉) is different from your conscience. Here’s the difference: Your conscience shouts, ‘here’s what you should do,’ while your intuition whispers, ‘here’s what you could do.’ Listen to that voice that tells you what you could do. Nothing will define your character more than that.
Sticking to your character requires a lot of courage. And to be courageous, you’re going to need a lot of support. And if you’re lucky, you have parents like mine. I consider my mom my lucky charm.
But look, if your family’s not always available, there’s backup. Do you remember that movie? It’s a Wonderful Life? There’s an actor’s line in it: No man is a failure who has friends.” And I hope you hold on to the friendships you’re made here at Harvard. And among your friends, I hope you find someone you want to share your life with.
【小题1】In the writer’s opinion, why can’t we define ourselves before 25 years old?
A.Because we are not old enough.
B.Because we are used to listening to others’ voices.
C.Because our parents and professors ask us to listen to the voices of our employers.
D.Because we can’t find suitable jobs.
【小题2】According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A.The writer completed his college study in his teens.
B.The writer’s movie career didn’t go all right so he returned to college.
C.It was not until he was 25 years old that the writer knew what he exactly wanted to do.
D.The writer suggests we should listen to our intuition.
【小题3】What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us?
A.It takes much courage to insist on your character.
B.It’s important to find a boyfriend or a girlfriend at Harvard.
C.There are some supporters who should be valued in our life.
D.The movie It’s a Wonderful Life is worth watching.
【小题4】The passage is most likely to be ________.
A.a speechB.a reportC.a film reviewD.an advertisement

In 2009, Kevin Pearce was at the height of his professional snowboarding career and bound for the Winter Olympics. But in an instant, it came to an end. During training, he struck his head on the edge of a pipe, resulting in a traumatic (创伤的) brain injury. It changed the course of the then-22-year-old’s life.

He had to relearn how to walk and talk and essentially start over. His older brother Adam quit his job and moved across the country to help him through rehab.

Wanting to bring hope and healing to others through yoga and meditation (冥想). Adain and Kevin co-founded the Love YourBrain Foundation in 2014. The nonprofit offers week-long meditations and community-based yoga classes across the United States for people who are living with long-term brain-related disabilities. “I think people feel isolated after brain injury because they don’t feel able, and when you don’t feel able, you generally retreat back inside.” Adam said, “At these retreats, people are given the space to lean into those deep challenges and express them and talk about them.”

Ultimately, the organization aims to create a safe space and supportive community where people with brain-related disabilities can heal together. “Connection happens quickly because there’s such a shared common understanding among the group.” Adam said. “Once someone sees someone be vulnerable, it instantly allows the next person (to be). By the end, people start to see vulnerability as a superpower.”
