Peter Tabichi, 【小题1】 math and science teacher who has worked to change life for students in a poor area in Kenya, has won the $l million Global Teacher Prize for 2019. Over 10,000 teachers from 179 different countries took part in the competition this year. Mr. Tabichi 【小题2】 (choose) from among the ten final teachers.

Mr. Tabichi works al Keriko Secondary School in Pwami Village, Kenya. The school is in a poor area 【小题3】 faces many challenges. The classes are huge - there are about 58 students for every teacher.

The school also does not have many 【小题4】 (teach) materials that are common in 【小题5】 schools. There is only one computer at the school, and the Internet connection is not very good. Still, Mr. Tabichi has been able to lead his students to great results. He has tried 【小题6】   (build) on things that the students are already interested in and good at. In the last three years, the number of students 【小题7】   (double), and yet there are far 【小题8】 (few) behavior problems than there were before Mr. Tabichi started.

He also helps the families of his students and the other people in the area. Once every three or four years, the area is hit by a serious drought. Mr. Tabichi has worked to teach the local people 【小题9】 to grow plants that can survive even when there isn’t much rain.

Mr. Tabichi said that if he won the 【小题10】 (compete), he would like to use the money to improve his school. He wants to help build u the science program. He hopes to buy more computers and get the school a better Internet connection.

“To be a great teacher, you have to be very creative, you have to do more and talk less.” he says.

Maurice Ashley was kind and smart, a former graduate【小题1】(return) to teach, and this job was no game for him; he meant business. In his introduction, he made【小题2】clear that our credits would be hard-earned. In order to pass the class, among other criteria (原则；标准), we had to write a paper【小题3】how we plan to apply what we would learn in class to our future professions and,【小题4】(eventual), to our lives. I【小题5】(manage) to get an A in that course and learned life【小题6】(lesson) that have served me well beyond the classroom.

Maurice Ashley was【小题7】good teacher. He reminds us of Confucious, who is respected by most Chinese as the【小题8】(great) teacher of all time. Perhaps the most important word he taught was “ren”,【小题9】means “benevolence (仁)”. According to Confucius, benevolence means kindness, loyalty and unselfishness. In fact, benevolence is the heart of his teaching. Every teacher should follow in his footsteps and stress benevolence【小题10】(improve) his teaching.

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother 【小题1】 raised me when my dad left us. I 【小题2】 (be) into sports since I was six years old. I have known many 【小题3】 (coach) and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually 【小题4】 (focus) on drills(训练) to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.

When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawlowski. I thought I was certain to 【小题5】 (select) for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts(选拔赛) and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make 【小题6】 with no problem. That was a big mistake.

Brian Pawlowski is the 【小题7】 (strict) coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, but he expected 200% effort. Some think this is crazy, 【小题8】 it isn’t. After training, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, Mr. Pawlowski, your lesson was the best I ever had. I was 【小题9】 (complete) sincere. He expects us to be excellent 【小题10】 just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges.
