Generally speaking, women are expected to stay home and raise families. But some brave women are determined to take off on amazing adventures around the world. They go to space or sail around the world. In all, they can make all kinds of outstanding achievements.

Jeanne Baret (1740—1807) was a French scientist. She studied plants. And, she was the first woman to sail around the world. In 1766, Baret wanted to set sail with a group of scientists. But they were all men. Women weren’t allowed to travel on French navy ships. So, Baret disguised herself as a man. And she sailed away!

Hester Stanhope (1776—1839) was from England. Ambitious, brave and determined, Hester Stanhope was never cut out for a traditional life. She wanted to travel. She traveled throughout the Middle East by herself. And she led an archaeological dig there. As the greatest female traveler of her age, she was the first Western woman to cross the Syrian desert, where she was honored as the “Star of the Morning” by the Bedouin.

Nellie Bly (1864—1922) was a journalist. In 1887, she wrote a story about hidden problems at a mental hospital. She disguised herself as a patient at the hospital. Then she wrote an alarming six-part report. The story made Bly well-known. It also led the way for other women journalists. Two years later, Bly set a world record. She traveled around the globe in 72 days!

Louise Boyd (1887—1972) was the first woman (at the age of 68) to fly over the North Pole and was regarded as the “Ice Lady” by the media. During her early Arctic voyages, she hunted polar bears with European nobles, and went to the Arctic to study the effects of the polar magnetic field. She enjoyed a degree of fame. King Haakon of Norway awarded Boyd the Knight’s Cross of St. Olaf for her bravery and competence.

Field Trip Day

On Friday, May 6, our class will take a field trip to North Park Zoo. The zoo has lions, elephants, and other interesting animals. Many of the animals we have been studying will be there for us to closely observe.

Our class will be divided into six teams. Each team will have five students and one leader. The leaders are listed in the table.

Team 1

Miss Banker

Team 2

Mrs. Lopez

Team 3

Mr. Harper

Team 4

Miss Abel

Team 5

Mr. Soto

Team 6

Mrs. Thomas

What You Need to Know

On the morning of the trip, the students will be divided into teams. One student from each team will receive a camera. The camera person will take pictures of the team, the animals, and other fun sights at the zoo.

All students should wear blue shirts. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes because we will be walking all day. Please bring a bag lunch and a drink. We will have a picnic at the park inside the zoo. Bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit and a drink, for later in the day.

When we are at the zoo, always remain with your team. Do not leave the team without asking permission from the team leader.

Feeding the Animals

The only animals that students are allowed to feed are those in the Children’s Zoo. Special food can be bought at the zoo for 25 cents and given to these animals. Do not feed your lunch to them. It is not good for the animals.

Parent Information

The cost is $1.00 for students and $3.00 for adults to enter the zoo. The students will leave the school at 9:00 A.M. and return at 2:30 P.M.

Please sign the permission paper. Return it along with the money to your children’s teacher by Monday, May 2. Both the permission paper and the money should be in an envelope with your child’s name written on the outside.

Many fruit trees and bushes are very simple to plant using no equipment except some potting soil and a heating equipment. In fact, you can get a handful of cuttings for free from a friend during pruning (修剪) season and end up with a whole homemade fruit farm.

Grapes

They are the first easy species on my list because they will grow in most parts of the US and are easy to root from hardwood cuttings. Hardwood cuttings are pieces of one-year-old wood taken in the late winter before the buds start to grow.

Figs

They are just easy to root, but I put them second on my list because northerners will have a hard time keeping the plants alive. If you live party way north, you can grow figs as long as you choose a cold-hardy variety.

Rabbiteye blueberries

They are an example of another kind of self-rooting plant. After a few years, it will begin to send up suckers from near the base. The suckers that are at least a few inches away from the parent plant will generally grow roots a year after emerging, at which point you can dig down until you’ve found several roots.

Gooseberries

They are simple because they just about root themselves. If you allow (or force) one branch to grow along the ground, then cover part of the branch with rich soil, roots will grow on the underwater part. Cut their stems off next year and you’ll have one or more gooseberry plants to set out elsewhere.

【小题1】What makes grapes the first easy species on the author’s list?
A.Their high production.B.Their delicious and special taste.
C.Their great economic value.D.Their strong adaptability to grow.
【小题2】When will you get new gooseberry plants?
A.After growing along the ground.
B.Before covering part of the branch.
C.After cutting their stems the next year.
